Extra toe?
Sapphire has an extra toe on hrleft rear foot/leg, itis floppy and i don't evn think she notices it. Apparently this can be a common thing with dogs and i know it is best to get it removed sooner rather than later. Does anyone know how it all works? theprecedure etc and maybe a rough estimate on the costs, we don't have her insured just yet, we are still shopping around.

Re: Extra toe?
Extra toes can be alot more problematic that dew toes getting caught in things all the time, she may end up breaking it or even ripping it off, the operation should be just as easy as having dew claws removed just a needle in the foot to numb the area though that depends if it has bone in it or if it's attached to the foot.

Re: Extra toe?
Is it actually an extra toe, or is it the dew claw that hasn't been removed?

Re: Extra toe?
It is a little toe with a claw in it. It just freely moves when you touch it whereas the others have a little bit of resistance, she only has it on the one leg.

Re: Extra toe?
To be honest, I'd ask the vet's opinion. If it were Dempsey I'd be inclined to get it removed if possible cause he's such a clumsy dog - he's already broken both front dew claws!

Re: Extra toe?
Oh poor Dempsey.
I'm gonna call the vets tomorrow and see what they say.
Also i used Spot On flee treatment about 3 hours ago and since i used it she has done nothing but scratch, sh wasn;t scratching before and there is no evidence of flees whatsoever. Is this normal? i'm worried she may have had a reaction. I will speak to the vet about this tomorrow too but i'm not gonna be able to sleep if i think it could be a bad reaction

Re: Extra toe?
I don't use the flea treatments unless I think there's a problem. To my mind if you don't need to put chemicals on your dog, then don't!
I mean, you wouldn't use a louse killer on your hair once a month, would you?

Re: Extra toe?
This is true. I just thought prevention is better than cure, but after the scratching i won't be using agai unless i need to. I'm just worried she has had a bad reaction. She is ok now, but she keeps stopping to scratch at her neck...

Odourless Garlic would be my advice 2-3 times a week after a meal.

Re: Extra toe?
You could also try rinsing the coat after a bath with diluted tea tree oil. That seems to work.

Re: Extra toe?
I decided not to go to the vets yet, she is due her 2nd injection in a couple of weeks so i can ask about it then. It's not causing her any bother but i know it might end up catching on something later on.

Re: Extra toe?
I'm not too worried at the moment, but with it being floppy and sticks out it might cause problems later. I will have a word with the vet when i take her, but i might leave it and see how it goes, i don't really wanher to have unnecessary procedures.

Re: Extra toe?
Yeah thats a dew claw probabilly from the terrier in her, my lot have them, only had one problem with my boy Taz their usually alright and cause no bother but other times they can be ripped off or torn if it is caught while the dog is running to fast etc, It is odd that she does not have another on the other foot though.
