Veterinary Nurse Empty Veterinary Nurse

Post by Kathy Thu Oct 13 2011, 20:03

I have been out of work for a while now due to a permanent back injury caused in a car accident a few years ago.
Recently been considering training to become a veterinary nurse. I would be taking the vocational training route which would take at least 3 years. Does anyone have any ideas, info, on this subject? Any advice appreciated. Many thanks.

Go for it.

Why not get friendly with your local vet's nurses? They could tell you far more than most people here could!

Always a good idea to talk with someone that has already been through the process.

I did 3 years of a veterinary nursing degree when I was 19, dropped out in 3rd year of a 4 year degree to have babies and because the pay was rubbish. The pay is much the same as an untrained veterinary nurse and many practices favour untrained for whatever reason. Anything you need to know just ask, I did the degree programme but know some info from working in a practice for 3 years. I have to say it is a very rewarding job, and absolutely ideal if you love animals. But the pay is something that puts many people off, as it is very low. Something that isn't ideal if you have a family to support or a mortgage to pay etc. Good luck though, let me know if you want to know anything etc!

Just want to add, if you do have a back injury which is still causing pain or problems, vet nursing may not be a good option. It involves a great deal of manual lifting, as well as bending down to the animals, cleaning their cages etc and it does take its toll on a healthy back.
Sorry don't mean to put you off, just things to think about before you make a decision!
