Socialising with other dogs
Suki is adorable with all of us in the family. But the encounter with other dogs...(let's not mention cats) is horrible.
By way of background, she was not treated well when she was a puppy and when we got her, she was scared of anything blue for instance and sticks as well.. (this is quite funny!)
Everytime she sees another dog, she's ready to attack, we are getting quite desperate with the situation.
We would be most grateful for any suggestions or advice on how to deal with that situation.
Thank you!

Re: Socialising with other dogs
Hiya and welcome, I haven't ever had that problem before so I'm not going to be much help. Some dogs just do not get on with other dogs full stop, I hope this isn't the case and someone will help with some more info

Re: Socialising with other dogs
Hi and welcome from us and Suki.
Socialization should ideally be done when they are pups. There are some dogs that just will not tolerate other dogs so be aware of that possibility. At your dogs age try to find a dog that has a handler with a well socialized dog and meet on neutral territory for both dogs. It's best if yours is well exercised before the meeting. Walk the dogs together on opposite sides with the handlers in the middle. Repeat this process until the dogs seem to tolerate each other. Keep your dog away from any untrained or unsocialized dogs to prevent any further issues.
A dog trainer or behaviorist might be usefull as well if you are not overly experienced with dogs. Learning their body language is extremely important so you can clearly understand signs of aggrression. Here is a link that will help with that

Re: Socialising with other dogs
Hi & welcome!
What jstaff recommends is great advice.
You could also try the "watch" command. When you're at home, have some treats handy, say "Watch" & hold a treat up in front of your face. As soon as your dog looks at you give the treat. This will need to be repeated quite a few times until your dog starts to anticipate the treat & looks up at you as soon as you say "watch".
Once you've done that, take treats with you on walks. As soon as you see a dog approaching, put your dog into a sit & give the "watch" command. It may take several goes to get it right, but eventually she should start to look at you for a treat as soon as another dog is anywhere near.
Just to repeat, though, some staffs will never get on with other dogs, so although you may be able to control her reaction you might not be able to get rid completely.

Re: Socialising with other dogs
Yes you have a good chance of your dog tolerating others with training but playing together may never happen but thats okay you can be asured your dog will live a happy life with just what it sees as family and as long as your responsible its okay dont beat yourself up it is sometimes there nature
