If you mean hand signals... I find it helps them know what I want them to do. Probably can teach either way, but I find hand signals helpful. I like it when I can get to the point where I don't have to say much if I'm on the phone or talking to someone and can still give my dog a command.

hand signals was what i meant (well its all the same thing really) Big Grin

i have noticed a lot of people rely purely on voice command but i find the dog understands better if both verbal and signals are used. especialy the wait cos you dont want to be shouting all the time when you get further away so a quick hand gesture does the trick. plus god forbid but if he went deaf he could still understand me.

I use hand signals, but I didn't start doing it intentionally - think I'm just guilty of talking with my hands a lot!

With my Border Collies, Belgians & GSDs I always used hand signals as well as verbal. In the end, they all used to respond immediately to the hand signals without any need for verbal commands.

I did the same with Bandit, although I never got to the stage where I'd just use hand signals, his attention would wander.

Dempsey, well, Dempsey's a little different. I can make him stay, sit and change direction with just a hand signal, but have to call his name to get him to look at me first - he doesn't pay me much attention when we're out! Other than that, it's mainly verbal & much repeated! Big Grin

another advantage to hand signals is when your at the side of a busy road and a big truck goes by. couldnt hear myself so couldnt expect the dog to hear me but a quick hand signal and he sat and waited
