Annual Vaccinations

I've now had official confirmation that vaccinations only have to be given every 3 years, after the 1st annual booster, and as long as there are no specific areas of concern, ie certain areas are known to be hotbeds of distemper etc.

Page 3, Paragraph 5.............

Vaccines should not be given needlessly. Core vaccines should not be given any more frequently than every three years after the 12 month booster injection following the puppy/kitten series, because the duration of immunity (DOI) is many years and may be up to the lifetime of the pet.

I wrote to my insurance company and enclosed a full copy of the WSAVA guidelines & they have written accepting that.

Just do make sure for insurance purposes that they know as some won't pay out unless they are up to date. Xx

That's great! We got that option a few years back, too. Well, the Norwegian Kennel Club started accepting the three year thing for entering shows and competitions, but when I spoke to my vet she said it had already been approved for every three years for quite some time before that. It's great that we don't have to over-vaccinate too badly and still do it by the book.

That's why the vet sugested that I print out the WSAVA's recommendations & send it to the Insurance company. Obviously you also have to go by whether or not there are high levels of each disease in your area - the vets should be aware of that & may advise more frequent vaccinations against whichever disease is high risk.

I totally agree with you, hence followed your guidence and haven't had it done, but, when I asked you last time about it I spoke to the insurance people they won't pay out unless she is up to date, nothing to do with what the vets suggest.

I guess its why my insurance is so cheap and why there is so much 'small print'. Just saying cause basically I am paying monthly for something I can't claim on, if you get what I mean!

I suppose I'm saying I need to get a different insurance!

But every three years IS up to date!? Isn't that the point, really?

No, it's supposed to be annually done, according to my insurance. If not they have a clause not to pay.

Ive had mine vacinated as puppies through adolesence then after 5 years I would only have it done if say there were cases in my area and not without testing if they still have imunity. Ive always felt that vets vacinate unnesesary just for profit and not for concern of the dog

My insurance said all vaccinations must be up to date - it doesn't actually say annually. 'Up to date' used to mean annually, but not now. My vet actually agreed that vets in this country over-vaccinate! That's why I sent the WSAVA paper to the insurance company, to show that they were up to date.

This is what my policy states............

3. Vaccinations
You must ensure that your pet is
vaccinated in accordance with the
recommendation of your vet against
distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis and
parvovirus for dogs and feline infectious
enteritis, feline leukaemia and cat flu
for cats.

So have i got this right....... Kaos is due his vacs next month but he will need those because he is just over a year old. If i show that thingy to the kennels they go 2 when we are away they should accept it? x

The puppy vaccinations & the first yearly booster are essential & MUST happen if the dog is to be protected properly.

After that he shouldn't need to have boosters until he's 4 years old. The kennels should be up to date with the advice, but you should check with them first, just in case you get there & they say "No, sorry, no can do!"
