Tail kink
Hi I'm new and not quite sure if this is the correct place to post this, but here goes.
I am the proud owner of the best little staffy puppy in the world (not biased at all lol ).
He is 4 months old and ever since I got him he has had a little dark area on his tail. I've noticed that in this area the darker hairs seem to "stand up" a little more. Or at least I though so. Now I'm wondering if this is a tail kink after someone mentioned it to me. I have done some research and I know it is not serious and the only limitations an inherited tail kink can lead to are that I should not use him for breeding... I'm really just curious if it is a kink, or if this is normal. I have seen a couple of other staffies that have the same sort of kink in roughly the same place. Is this just because this is how the tail is supposed to look, or are kinks that common?
I will be x-raying him in about a year, but would like to hear some opinions because I am impatient
Does anyone have any opinions or does anyone who has any experience with tail kinks?
Thanks!

Re: Tail kink
Do you know if this is normal? Or a genetic fault, or perhaps a break as puppies? I'm so curious!

Re: Tail kink
Is this hair or a physical part of the tail? If its just hair it may shed out

Re: Tail kink
That is what I am not completely sure about. When I feel the tail at that area it feels like that part is a little thicker than the rest. Or that it slightly tapers in after that point.
I've thought it was the hairs just standing up differently until someone told me about genetic kinks. It looks like a completely normal tail with no kink unless he is "alert" and the hairs are standing up a little.

Re: Tail kink
My staffy has had the same problem her whole life , but on hers if you look at the skin it is dry so I just use coconut oil . Not sure why her tail is like that rite there but I just kee an eye on it becaus she does have real bad allergies so it's the first place sh always gets her bumps if her skin starts getting an infection.
Maya's hair also does feel thicker rite there .
Maybe it's just a staffy thing.
My advice is watch the skin under the hair cause it could be from some irritant.

Re: Tail kink
Id wait till your dogs grown a bit i have seen this in a lot of staffy tails. However if the tail is causing problems id contact the vet .

Re: Tail kink
My Flo also has a strange semi bald patch and slight thickening of the tail there so I'm guessing this is somewhat usual for Staffies

My boy def has a kink at the base of his tail too, I've wondered too but it doesn't bother him at all & vets never seen it as an issue.

Re: Tail kink
As most will know the staff tail should be thick at the top and gradually taper to a point. The only time I have experienced a problem was a young bitch that I owned who developed a lump on the tail in the same place as the one photoed, our vet checked it and confirmed a cancer lump in the tail.Had the lump cut out and never had a problem after, the fur grew back perfectly. But as said the dog has been checked by a vet,so that shouldn't be the problem.Perhaps its just the way the bones have formed in the tail.
