Halti Empty Halti

Post by michellemartin Wed Aug 27 2014, 18:39

Hi everyone! I bought a halti for Alfie last week along with a double ended lead to attach to both his harness and the halti (I'm very paranoid about him somehow breaking free after it happened when he was really small!). Most of the time he walks well but he has his bad days so thought I'd try one out.
As expected the first time I put the halti on him he fought to get it off and just lay down outside the house and refused to move. I've used it twice on him since and he was okay but seemed a little timid and I noticed he didn't toilet once on both walks.
I put it on him again tonight and he just sat on the floor shaking.. Absolutely broke my heart so of course I took it off and he was instantly back to normal! Have any of you had anything like this with your dogs when using a halti?! I know it's not hurting him but I couldn't bear to see him like that!! Any comments appreciated!! Xx

I never used one but not sure it's the best to prevent him from running away. I'd probably just use a collar/ harness he can't get away from or both with a short lead.

No it's not to stop him running away, the halti is to stop him pulling. I was just saying I got a double ended lead so I could attach to his harness also.

I tried a similar thing with Katy to help with the pulling. Once I put it on she just layed down & wouldn't move. Since starting classes we now use a half check collar which seems to work but as soon as she pulls I have to check her & say close, so far so good Smile

Yes that's exactly what he did the first time! We used a half check collar for a while but we were sold a faulty one and it snapped on a main road! I'm sure if I bought another it would be fine I'm just a little wary now of anything less than a harness! Maybe I will have to be brave and buy another Smile thank you x

He's just annoyed that he has lost control. i use one on my boy and my lass follows his lead. if i could explain the look i get when i put it on....swear words that would get me banned lol . stick with it he will get used to it. mine are trained pullers and its in there blood so its a great thing to have when needeing to walk well. it doesnt hurt, its comfortable, they just get very miffed that it stops them pulling and getting there own way

I've only ever used a half check collar on my old boy and have used one with the pup. We've just got a ezydog checkmate collar for her which is a all fabric half check type but it has a plastic clip for easy fitting. I'm not sure which one I prefer but the ezydog one is maybe just swinging it as we don't have to adjust it every time we fit it. Never leave your dog alone with this type of collar on.
Try putting the halti on while your in the house but don't walk him, then build up from there.

Hello. You need to train him to wear it, in the same way that you would train to wear a muzzle. Can take a week to 14 days. Let me know if you need any guidance.

Bug wore one for a year after adoption while I was training her. Was a lifesaver for her as she was a lunger and very strong/untrained on arrival!

We have to use one for Alfie, for pulling. We got him used to wearing it for short periods at home and treating him, before using it out. I have to say he still doesn't like it much.

Thanks everyone for your advice Smile I knew he wouldn't be a fan of it but couldn't believe he was actually shaking having it on! I'll persevere and hopefully he'll start to get used to it Smile thanks again xx
