Bad Habit.. (?) Empty Bad Habit.. (?)

Post by GeoX Mon Jul 22 2013, 18:13

Well,my staffy Midas got a really bad habit..I'm sharing it with you so you can help me...If it's possible..
Let's begin...his favorite game is to pull things...he likes to use his teeth to pull things all the time..But whenever he finds something that it's unbreakable by his teeth (a rock,a bottle of beer)..he is going crazy..he is starting to grow feelings for that thing..if someone goes to play with him when he plays with it he is barking but with his childish bark, not the aggressive one. Also,if you get closer he is starting to protect that thing with his feet and his teeth...he is licking it,he is pulling it and howling for time.If he bite it..he won't leave it for nothing..even if i say him, even if i scare him, even if i hit him...He will let it drop down when he feels that no one suspicious is near to get his "toy".I can't understant it because he is not like this all the time..He is loyal to me!

Please do not scare or hit your dog, this will only make matters worse in the long run. As suggested above try to replace the item with a toy or try to distract him with another game of something different.

His jaws are not locking, he is just very determined to hang onto what ever he has hold of.

as jo says above , no hitting Smile so maybe a bad phrase for you to use . The jaw doesn't lock they just have very powerful jaw muscles . Try high value treats to exchange with

They can be very determined Ledger will only give up his chuck it ball for another chuck it ball and his tuggy well he wants to tug and play it's his treat at agility so letting him win mostly gets him to drop and garlic sausage does the trick otherwise

you have to be in control (but nicely) our 2 can get like that and you have to take the toy or whatever from them. I sit down and say 'thank you' and they open their mouths and then lots and lots of praise. takes a lot of trying sometimes but when they get it right the tail wagging is something to behold Big Grin

All great advise above, I also find that if Rocky has something that he shouldn't, and I persist in getting it off him, he thinks its a fun game, he starts running around the yard sending me on a wild goose chase, if you having something you know he loves that you can swap it for, he will forget the item that is less value to him and drop it for the better one! But never be angry with them, they just think its a game!
