Hi all, new to this forum.

My fiance and I got a new blue staffy last week, he is just over 9 weeks old.

He has been taught his name since he was 5 weeks old when we gave the breeder his name so she could start calling him by his name.

Problem is that even though he knows his name, he doesn't always respond, he sometimes might look but won't come to us, he won't always stop what he is doing as well.

He is not a food orientated pup, we have tried him with special treats (even when he is hungry for tea the treats dont work), toys, and lots of affection when he does come. We don't know what else to do as he is also not learning other behaviours, he has learnt to take himself outside to the toilet now however will not come back inside when he is called or anything.

He can't start puppy school for another 3 weeks due to there only been 2 places that provide it where we live and he has to be 12 weeks for both to accept him.

We have contacted an obedience trainer yet still haven't heard from her about making a time for a consultation.

Has anyone got any tips or tricks that they have found to work for such a disobedient pup that doesn't respond to their name or who isn't food orientated as well? Has anyone tried clicker training and found it to work?

Any help would be appreciated please.
We are really struggling to train him, he is just such a stubborn dog.

He is likely still settling in to his new home so it will take a little time. Pups have short attention spans as well. The best way to go is to have multiple short training sessions every day and use reward based training. Also make sure to end on a positive note.

we have been doing several short sessions throughout the day with lots of positive reinforcement and only relating his name to a good experience (hugs, cuddles, pats, toys, treats, etc) however as he is not responsive to these things what other types of rewards can we use?

Food and positive attention are what I've always used. It can take some pups a little longer to catch on or warm up to their handlers

thanks, we tried using different treats today, i made some homemade beef and rice cookies and he has been doing really well with them, i think the idea of something different and unique has really helped him catch on a lot better Smile

They all have their favorite treats. When you figure out what he likes best try not to use it in the house too much so you will be able to use it as a high value treat when you really need him to focus while outside.

we have learnt that he responds to new exciting treats, so will be regularly making different treats and mixing them up so its always something new and different for him both inside and out Smile

You've had some good advice here Hayley.

Your pup is still very young, everything is new to him and he's still learning.

Personally, I have found that Kuchar will, at 14 months old, respond to his name and a "come here", rewarded by a treat (a bit of cooked liver in his case) perfectly, UNLESS there is something else - a smell, or best of all (according to him) the sight of another dog he might (if he's lucky) play with. Then he goes completely deaf!

I don't think, personally, that your pup is particularly stubborn - just that he's very young and still needs to learn, and also being a Staff wants to play with everyone and everything that he sees!

yes it has been helpful Smile we have a trainer coming in about 30 minutes to give us some tips as well as there are a few things that we need help with as all the info we have found on the net doesnt work but hopefully once we get some advice from this trainer after her meeting him she will see what we mean Smile

ok so trainer was really helpful, we have both owned puppies before however they were both were easy to train compared to this boy, we understand he is only a pup however after a month of been trained with him name he still was not responding to it like he should hence why we got the trainer in, we have picked up on what he responds to with his training and the tips the trainer gave us were very helpful, his digging has stopped (for now) and he has been a little more responsive with us today.

We obviously are not expecting miracles and seeing as this was my first post on here asking for a bit of advice Hayley I would appreciate it if you would keep your useless negative posts to yourself and only respond if you actually have real advice to offer rather than pointless ramble.
