Learning to walk on a lead Empty Learning to walk on a lead

Hi,
I am looking for some advice on how to get my girl to walk on a lead preferably next to us. We have a lightweight lead and have been getting her used to her collar each day. Putting it on her, rewarding with praise and sometimes a treat. Slowly building up to all day.

We have let her drag the lightweight lead around the house and garden. We have used a treat to get her to follow and walk beside us as we do laps around the garden making sure we give her lots of praise and small treats as we see fit.

Any other useful ideas? Or is just more practice with a splash more patience? Smile

Just practice , patience , treats and lots of encouragement , if she can't go out on lead yet then take her out in your coat so she gets used to the big wide world and its smells and noises, sounds like you are doing everything right though Big Grin

Wish we'd thought to do this with Charlie while we were waiting for his injections, the only place he went was the vet to be prodded and poked Sad

As this is "my" first staffy and puppy. I want to do everything right. My family has always had dogs but I have never owned a dog solely and taken complete responsibility for one. It can all be a little daunting. I really want her to be my best friend. A well socialised dog and a huge part of my life. A dear friend of mine owned a staffy years ago and she was amazing. She went everywhere that he did. I guess I hope in time Honey will do the same. Thank you for your support! I really am trying to do the best by her and I guess we just need more practice and more patience!
Friends and family that meet her can not believe how clever she is! She can sit, stay and drop her toys and food on command already at 11 weeks today! I guess the walking on a lead will come in time.

Thanks again everyone! Big Grin

It takes time for them to stop being scared of going out and actually enjoy walks. Don't pull her first few times you go out let her explore and as she gets more confident and excited to go out you should teach her to walk by your side. So you keep the leash short and relaxed and correct her when she pulls. Don't do this until she's starts enjoying her walks tho beacause you will scare her and put her off. I did this with my bitch shes now 7 months and walks next to me without pulling on the lead. Smile
