Vet visit Empty Vet visit

Tyson's annual booster shots were due this month and after seeing him in obvious discomfort with his rear end, we had a visit to the vets. He got his boosters, had a deworming treatment and had his anal glands expressed.

Does anyone know what causes them to get blocked? He is on Royal Canin kibble and sardines added (one little one with a little of the oil) about 4 times a week.

Also, he now weighs in at 22.5kg and the vet says he is over weight. Apparently the back between his tail and hip joints should be level with his tail and he is rounded there (distinctly so). I think I may have been feeding him the recommeded X2 instead of dividing it between morning and evening.

I don't really no what causes the glands to get blocked, never thought about it just thought it was one of those things as I have never had to have Moo's done, but I did my first.

So you putting Ty on a diet Smile

Some dog have an issue with their glands and some don't. Its like some people get acne and some don't. I was told there is an array of "whys" - diet, genetics etc. thinking who knows.

I think it depends on the dog for the glands .. my old boy had problems with them and had the relief from a vet every month or so lol bless him! .. Vinnie n skye have no probs with theres as of yet so.

You could try feeding him raw?
Thats interesting though because my dog is 23kg, 14 inches tall (I'm guessting Ty is taller) and hes not overweight.
Just like people i suppose, different shapes! Tongues

Does your dog have soft stool or hard stool?

I read somewhere that if your dog has hard stool it helps to squeeze the anal sacs and if your dog commonly has soft stool the anal sacs tend to build up and needs to be manually squeezed.

I don't have a Staffy, yet, but I do have a Pomeranian and I need to squeeze her anal sacs once in a while because her stools vary from soft to hard so it builds up. If the anal sacs don't get squeezed, the stuffs inside leaks out.
