semi - raw feeding?
tried tyson this morning approx 225g defrosted RAW beef chunks and tripe (frozen stuff from pets at home) he kind of picked at the beef but never finished it and didnt touch any of the tripe...... forgot about taking some out freezer for his dinner so put a bowl over a pot of boiling water and defrosted it but turned cooker off came back and the heat had cooked the meat a little..... he had a bit of a wolf at it but never finished it. I think the semi cooked way will work with him, hes just not 100% himself yet and on antibiotics..
my question is am I losing any goodness by cooking it a little? and is there anything i can add to it to make him eat it??? I read from previous posts on the BARF and RAW but cant find my answers (sorry if im blind) ive got some rabbit, chicken, lamb mince and also some lamb liver in the freezer but im not want to fire so many meats at him in one go.

Re: semi - raw feeding?
i would say semi raw is not an option. all raw meats have a bacteria which i must admit i dont like the idea of feeding domestic animals raw meat but they can take it aprently. semi raw means that this meat must have been partly cooked at some point and the bacteria would have multiplied with the heat and so i would say that there are dangerous amounts of bacteria on that meat

Billy has raw, as long as the meat has been frozen this kills of any bacteria, I do cook liver for Billy as he does not like it raw, he also does not like mince.
Have you tried to give Tyson chicken wings, if you feed raw you should give them bones as well. Caryll is the expert in this and will give you lots of help, there is a thread on the forum about this I will dig it out and get you the link

Re: semi - raw feeding?
I had to dip the raw meat in boiling water at first for 1 of my dogs when I started them on BARF, and I partially cooked Tia's meat too when I got her a few months ago as she had been on a commercial dog food with her previous owner. Tia was grand with it, and after a couple of days I only partially cooked half her meat and a few days later she was eating all raw..
You have to feed bones and can't partially cook them though, but you can pour some boiling water on top, for bones I feed chicken necks, backs and wings...

If he is still recovering and you are worried about him eating atall you can add a bit of water to minced dog meat or tripe or chunks and cooks it through a bit, then as others have said you can gradually wean him onto completely raw. One of my girls eats anything raw but the younger girl wont eat raw offal or tripe so we have to cook hers a bit for her, weird really given that she has always been fed raw since puppyhood!

Re: semi - raw feeding?
I'm glad this came up again. I'm unsure of whether to feed Sapphire uncooked meats and bones or give her dry food. Can i do both? Feed her raw in the mornings and afternoons (because she is still a pup) and dry in the evenings?

Re: semi - raw feeding?
Some people successfully feed dry & raw. As long as the raw is in the morning & the dry is in the evening, there shouldn't be a problem.
I would never pour boiling water on raw meat or bones as, as said in an earlier answer by _julie_ you could run the risk of bacteria increasing rapidly & causing an upset.
A dog's stomach/digestive system seems to cope extremely well with the bacteria that are normally present in raw meat (something humans can't cope with), but part-cooking may give problems.
Don't forget, though, that raw meat & bones diets are not for every dog, or every owner!

Sod it! Ignore my last post! I'm going to feed her raw foods Only the best for my ickle baby lol.
I read that the packaged raw foods bought frm shops isn't all that good but i thought i would ask you lovely lot first. Pets At Home is just around the corner so i don't mind shopping there for her foods. Are the raw foods from there ok?

Re: semi - raw feeding?
I buy the frozen beef chunks & frozen tripe chunks, but not the mince. As long as they get a nice meaty bone as well (raw, of course) there's no problem. Chicken wings/carcasses or lamb necks/spines/ribs are all good.
