Howling when left
I know it's early days but we got our baby Staffie on Saturday and as soon as he realises he can't be with someone he howls and howls. He's 7 weeks old and I totally understand he's just left his Mam and siblings but what's the best course of action? Ignore? Or comfort?

It's best to ignore it. If you provide comfort every time he will learn that if he wants comfort or attention all he has to do is howl and he will recieve it.
You can try leaving him by himself for short periods of time and slowly build up the time you are away. Are you crate training? It helps if they have a place they see as their own and feel safe in.

yes, ignore it otherwise he will do it forever, is it just at night, if so you may want to try a crate, it is someone safe and quiet he can go to.
It will stop, billy cried for about 4 nights and then nothing

Re: Howling when left
Yes, best to ignore.
But you can east it along a little by leaving her for very short periods at a time during the day. Just a minute or two to start with & gradually increase. Make sure you actually leave the house, though, even if it's only for a minute, cause they're not stupid & they soon get to know the sound of the front door & will know if you're still in the house!
The trick is to not make a fuss before you go out - act as though it's the most normal thing in the world - and not go back in to her until she's quiet. Then you can go in & give her gentle praise.

Ignore, whatever you do dont go and comfort him as he will think all he has to do is howl and you will come running to him to him and give him what he wants.
Just makes the process so much longer.
Both our dogs cried the first 2 nights, not for very long either an they both realised that we were not going to come so stopped.
You did not mention if you were using a create they are a great way to help with toilet training, helping with seperation and generally a safe place for your dog to be when you carnt keep an eye on them.

All great advice, Cali used to howl at fire engine sirens which we get a lot in the city. We found it hilarious and quite sweet, but nevertheless we ignored it and he has stopped doing it.
Just persevere

Re: Howling when left
Thanks so much. No, no crate (as yet anyway - depends how anxious he gets) but last night he went a little longer without howling so fingers crossed!
