cats and dogs
Hi everyone,
New to the forum, but not to dog ownership!
I have an question.....
I have had a dog in the home for all of my adult life. I've kept cats aswell, but my current canine companion (staff/lab mix) has never lived with a cat as I decided not to get another after my last moggie passed away. I've had Indie, my pooch, since she was a tiny pup (now 2 years old). Early on she wasn't bothered about cats at all and would just ignore them and carry on investigating the world but the last year or so she has taken to wanting to chase them (obviously I don't let her though!). I would quite like to be able to introduce another cat into our home but I'm a bit concerned that she will not accept it. I have tried introducing her to friends cats in a very controlled way. She remained on lead and the cat in question is very confident and wasn't really fased by her at all. Gradually we moved closer and closer to the cat and she was excitable but not trying to snap, and not barking or growling. Tail was wagging and she seemed to be trying to lick and sniff the cat when we got within range. She was actually surprisingly good until the cat hissed at her - then she did try to snap, but thankfully the cat scarpered pretty quick. Is this the wrong way to try to get her used to cats? Can anyone suggest a better way? Has anyone else been sucessful at getting dogs with cat 'issues' to accept a cat in their home?
If it's not really possible to achieve then its not the end of the world, but if it is possible I'd like to give it a go.
Thanks x
