New Member who's new to Staffies
Hello all,
I have a 1 year old Staffy called Stanley. He's a fantastic dog and generally well behaved.
One annoying habit he has though is bolting out of the front door and thinking it's a great game when I/we go out to try to get him back. He runs around at 100mph always just out of reach. If we open the car door and say walkies he comes running and jumps into the car. So we can get him back but I would rather he didn't do it in the first place.
Has anyone got any tips or tricks on how to train him to stand by the door and look out rather than doing a runner?
Many thanks in advance.

Re: New Member who's new to Staffies
Hi there and Welcome from Me and Roxy.
To post photo's, first you need to create a Photobucket account ( oops, can't remember the web address, but if you google "photobucket" you should find it no probs ) and it's free to join.
Follow the link below, and you'll be posting pics in no time
https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t69-post-an-image-from-photobucket-to-the-forum
In regards to your dog running off, you'll have to start with basics..........I'm not an expert but maybe you could try putting Stanley on his lead and take him to the front door. Tell him to sit and stay, then open the door. Again....tell him to sit and stay ( all the while you are holding the leash to keep control over him should he try and do a runner ) He should begin to get the message and over time hopefully you'll see some improvements.
I'd be inclined to do this on a daily basis, when you know there are not too many distractions outside to start with.
Don't forget to give him plenty of praise for doing the right thing ( and a treat if you use them for his training......some do, some don't )
Good luck

Re: New Member who's new to Staffies
Welcome aboard . you will get loads of pleasure here so many beautiful dogs and lovely people, Stanley is a little star and you will get so much pleasure. Hope you get the games sorted but if its any consolation Tilly gives me the run around too and its always at the worst times , like 2 oclock in the morning when she won't come in from the garden , or when I'm running late for work and she won't come back to put her lead on , never runs away just like you say makes it into a game, but I've got the magic weapon with the doggy chocs , never fails but its always the last resort

Re: New Member who's new to Staffies
That is too funny! My boyfriend was the Bowie fan and he got me into him as well. So when we got our cat 2 years ago, Bowie just seemed to be the perfect name! Then when we got his sister, she had to be David Bowie's alter ego, Ziggy Stardust (we call her Ziggy)! We're kind of dorky, haha.Hillsey wrote:Saxon certainly is a Stanley doppelgänger!

Re: New Member who's new to Staffies
hi and welcome to the forum...
trets could be one of the easyest ways to try and get it under control...
start with him just sitting next to the door and you open it a bit,and keeping him sitted if he dont move reward him..
if he moves then put him back and try again..... and just kind of repeat that till you can open the door fully and he waits for you to let him know he can go...
but my two still fly out the door like they have never been out side before in their lifes.....
but they only run into the back garden...

Little rascal chews random things. If we can't find it Stanley's had it. Shoes & clothes pegs mainly. He also likes plastic. I found him with a green marker pen which he had destroyed. Was picking up green poo in the garden for a couple of days.
