Quick question about a post in announcements section??

Hiya -I just wanted to clarify my understanding of the reputation box and the like/dislike button? Does your reputation rating go up if someone 'likes' one of your comments? Or have I completely misunderstood this post? 
Think I only noticed that there are numbers next to 'reputation' today and I have found myself taking note of them now...
