Charlie being a little sod at the moment!!!!!!
GRRRRRRR!! Having problems with my once wonderfully well behaved boy!
We have lived in our new house for about 3 months now, in that time, Charlie has ripped up the dining room carpet, chewed the banistairs, chewed up the hallway carpet, chewed into the skirting boards, chewed the doorstops and has chewed a big hole in the bottom of one of my living room chairs!!
He has plenty of tough chew toys to keep him occupied, but prefers to chew up the house instead.
He is also becoming an embarrassment outside. He pulls like a train until I let him off lead, then when he's off, if he sees another dog, he's off to say hello, he does his friendly hello growly thing then jumps on them wanting to play which, understandably, majorly pisses off or scares the crap out of the owners!
I've started keeping him on the lead but he gets so frustrated cos he's used to running free and he just pulls and pulls and my arm cant take much more. If he sees another dog, he practically pulls my arm off trying to get over and say hi while the owners are giving me filthy looks, clearly thinking he wants to eat their dog!
We took him to a fete yesterday, and we met another staffy who was sniffing curiously at Charlie. I told the owner that he was friendly, but boisterous. She said it was fine so I let Charlie approach (on lead) to say hi. They were sniffing each other, then Charlie did his growly thing and nearly pulled my arm out of its socket in his haste to jump on the dog and play. Even though I knew he just wanted to play, and his body language showed he wanted to play, I couldnt blame the owner for giving me a mouthful and pulling her dog away.
Sorry for the essay, I'm just getting fed up. I need to try to get him to calm down around other dogs, I just don't know how. He just wants to play, and he likes to play boisterously. And then that growl, even though I know it's friendly, the owners dont, so when he jumps at their dog wanting to play straight after growling, they understandably think he's not friendly

Shon go back to basic training every night do 5-10 mins to reinforce what he already knows, soon as Samson shows signs of going out of line i take him back nightly to sit, stay, wait, walk to heel, waiting before going through doors ect it seems to pull him back in line

Yeah I think he needs reminding who's boss. When it comes to obedience indoors, he's spot on, does what he's told immediately. Outdoors he used to be an angel but is turning into a > now!
I'll take him back to basics and see how he goes. Cheers Marty

Definatly go back to basics for a few minutes a night, use repelants on the things he is chewing.
Also jumping on other dogs isn't really polite so you might want to watch that, as dogs can and will put him in his place if he keeps trying to jump up or over them.

Take plenty of exciting food treats so your interesting than anything else, cheese, hot dogs chopped up, chicken hold it in your hand so he walks to heel and keep giving him some and the further you go reduce the treats so he walks to heel further each time before getting the treat

Definitely back to basics. He's testing the limits & just needs reminding of his manners!

Re: Charlie being a little sod at the moment!!!!!!
Thanks all. He's still very good obedience-wise in the house apart from the chewing and he's absolutely amazing with people, kids especially so I can't complain too much. I know the chewing will get better in time and when he stops teething (which is when?) I just really need to get him to calm down when around other dogs. If anyone has any tips on that, I'd be very grateful. Thanks for the treats tip Marty, I'll work really hard on that with him. I still love him to death no matter what

Like some people on here have said go back to basics on the training, If your still having problems, Wait till hes year old and have hes bits taken away, Usually calms male dogs down, Did with my other dog, Or you might have to hire a dog trainer one to one, Which wouldnt be cheap but there be able show you right way of curbing that behaviour, Or a cheaper method take him to puppy training classes, And and the end of the sessions you can ask the trainer for tips how to stop this unwanted behaviour!
