nipping
Hi everyone,
this is my first post on this site and would appreciate any help and advice you can offer me when it comes to stopping my REGGIE from nipping people! I have a 6month old blue brindle staff named REGGIE He is a bundle of joy and has really learnt allot in the 2 an half weeks i have had him!he has learnt the commands sit, lie down, stay and is showing good signs of becoming a really nice addition to my family. he has a massive heart and is just full of so much love and affection but he has this naughty habit of nipping people when he greets them or when he is over excited and playful. I have read some other posts on the internet and have tried the things like.... raising my voice and saying NO!! Then ignoring him untill he has calmed down or replacing my hand for a toy or a bone for him to chew, but he still just doesnt get it . i Know it is still early days and perseverance is probably the key but i am just wondering if there is any other different techniques people have used and there staffies have responded well too. Also, he likes to jump up at people which i think i have started to get a grip on but it worries me that if he jumps he mite nip some one at the same time....(maybe on the face!!!)....All this said he has a lovely temperament and i am so glad i chose this breed of dog for my companion....He is just gorgeous

Re: nipping
hi from me and woody.
i think you are trying the right techniques but you need to choose one and stick with it rather than swapping and changing- it takes time for them to get it and repeated insructions that are the same over and over. Woody used to be a nightmare for nipping and because when he tiny he was so cute visitors would find it funny and wouldnt tell him off. we chose the ignore method and it took a whilebut he did stop after a while - just be patient and as i say keep to the one instruction/method

Thanks for such a quick response!
yeah i think im going to stick with the ignoring technique because by replacing my hand with a bone/toy it almost feels like im rewarding this kind of bad behaviour, if you know what i mean i have had the same problem with vistors like you have i try to stress to people that he is going through training and its not acceptable for him to chew on hands and jump up at them but i just get the usual response of.."its fine, i don't mind" which can get frustrating at times...lol, is that woody in your pic?

yeh thats my boy, had him from 8 weeks and he is now 17 months. its been a long hard slog and getting the message across to friends has been hard but you have to insist, its not so funny when they get bigger or its strangers.
you choose right, givding him a treat is telling him do that and when you stop i'll give you summat good

Oh, that is SO annoying!
I try to be polite, but tell them that it isn't what they mind, but what I mind, as it's my dog! It's ok for them to say they don't mind, but will they mind when he's a full grown BIG boy with muscles & jaws to match? I doubt it, somehow.

Re: nipping
We all go through this problem. Patience and consistency will pay off. I had a good bit of success with yelping like I was a hurt pup as well. Don't know why this works but it seems to.

Re: nipping
buster is doing the same thing, he's 5 months, gets over excited and mouths a bit, and I know how stressing it is when people say "aw he’s just playing its ok" NO ITS NOT OK!!
But yeah stick with the same technique, i always shout no at buster, and that usually does the trick for me.

Re: nipping
I think teaching the leave command it as vital or more so than the sit or lie command, teaching him to leave, so when he goes o do something like nip or grab something he is not supposed to say the commands for him to leave it alone, there is a certain way of doing it right and if done right he'll catch it quickly and you shouldn't have a problem.

It's a matter of consistency & patience, I'm afraid. When she jumps up or mouths just turn away & don't even make eye contact. If she continues, put her in another room (without saying a word) until she is calm. Some dogs get worse if you yelp or say no (although I've always said "No!" & turned away & it's always worked for me!), so maybe just the turning away is what you need to do. Sooner or later she'll realise that jumping/biting means no fuss + being calm means fuss & cuddles!
