Puppy refusing to walk
Hi guys, hope you’re all well.
So our 14 week old, Bear, started going out last week after after his second jab had been given the week earlier. He was so keen to get out and go walking and we were really pleased with how he’d taken to the collar and lead training we’d been giving him in the garden during his toilet training.
However, since the weekend he’s developed a stubbornness or fear in wanting to go any further than the end of the drive?
We had started to notice that he only went to do a number 2 when we got back home and thought this may be something to do with it?
If we take him out in the car to a field he seems to be absolutely fine?
Any ideas?
Thank you

Re: Puppy refusing to walk
Have you got a friend with a dog that you could walk with, sounds like could do with some confidence & another dog may help him.
As for number 2's I know of a few dogs that will only do it at home!
Let us know how he gets on

I like that idea mate, thank you. He does seem to become more carefree when he sees the neighbours dog. Will keep this thread updated.

Re: Puppy refusing to walk
Thought I’d update this thread.
Bear still struggles and we do feel it is an anxiety thing rather than a stubbornness issue. We all took the kids to school this morning and my wife dropped us off halfway back from home which is a nice 15 walk through our local playing fields. Started off very cagey but as soon as we were on the field he was in his element! Lots of dogs with great owners on there. He couldn’t contain his excitement. Absolutely loved it.
He had his play and then comfortably walked back home.
I think it’ll be a gradual progression for him on the walks but I’m so glad it’s not the outdoors overall that he’s reluctant to encounter!

Re: Puppy refusing to walk
That's great news, he's obviously just nervous walking on his own. The interaction with the others dogs will boost his confidence & socialise him too

Re: Puppy refusing to walk
Sounds like you are making progress.
My girl started to refuse at about 8 years old and for no reason that we could work out. As with you, if going by car fine or being dropped off and walking back all was good but for some reason she would NOT walk around the corner along the street and boy did we try every trick except walking with another dog.
The only other suggestion I can offer is perhaps using some distraction technique like having a really high value treat (frankfurter works well) and turn it into a training session along the way. That may be enough of a distraction.
Unfortunately that never did work for us so our little princess always got driven to her walks but was fine once there

Re: Puppy refusing to walk
Hi Ian, appreciate the reply. We’ve since found that he’s more and more relaxed with his walks. He has the occasional freezes and refusal to move on from there until comforted, but it’s not causing us any distress. We just want him to be happy and healthy.
He’s growing at a frightening pace. He’s nearly 14kg now and he’s only just turned 16 weeks!
