Orphan puppy
Rest assured, mum is still around but had to be removed from pups when they were around a week old.
Pups were bottle fed and are now on solids at around 4 weeks old, I think.
Even if these pups will be in contact with other adult staffies, they won’t have technically been raised by their mum 24/7.
Are these pups likely to have specific behaviour issues like separation anxiety or perhaps be overly boisterous/confident around their human family ?

Re: Orphan puppy
They could well have issues, Katy was taken from her mum at 5wks old! She never learnt doggy etiquette, although I socialised her with other dogs as soon as I could. They really need to learn from their mum! She doesn't know how to interact with them plus having a couple of aggressive dogs going for her= reactive!

Re: Orphan puppy
Hmmm … that’s what I was afraid of. Plus limited access to puppy school because of covid !

Re: Orphan puppy
No, absolutely not but I think my friend was thinking about pushing one in my direction for all of the helping hands I’ve given her.
I was especially curious as bottle fed foals are often become difficult horses so wondering if the equivalent principal could be applied to these pups.

Why were the pups removed from mum?

Re: Orphan puppy
Mum had chronic mastitis and after antibiotics not resolving at 100%, 2 teats were removed with onset of gangrene, from what I understand.
I’ve seen photos of mum and it’s a carnage with skin graphs and all
So obviously, mum was separated from pups but breeder says she’ll put pups in contact with other breeding dogs. Just not sure it’s the same thing as being educated by mum

Re: Orphan puppy
I think providing the pups have quality contact with other pups & (preferably) a calm adult bitch, then there shouldn't be a problem?

Re: Orphan puppy
Well the 5 pups are together and yes, she has other females, some of which are also retired. But will they really educate these pups as they would their own ?

Re: Orphan puppy
Our 15wk old boy was hand reared from a week old and never knew his mum but he’s doing just fine, he is fine around other people and is getting on well walking and meeting other dogs. I think it’s down to how well they are socialised from the start.

That is one really cute face in your avatar !
Good to know yours is doing so well. Breeder has sold all of the pups in the litter and none seemed to have any troubles, time will tell. I do think you are right in that “alternative” socializing can compensate
