Horrendous smell from my 7 year old Lucy
I have 2 staffies - Lucy 7 and Franky 6
Lucy was neutered as a puppy-When she comes to sit down next to us she gives off this awful smell. Describing the smell is difficult as I've never smelt something so awful before. . best I can say is a mix between cut grass, mould and what ever you thick might be unpleasant!
A year ago I did ask the vet if she could still be giving off a smell as though she was -On Heat- but this was dismissed straight away and was put down as her anal glands being full - which was soon rectified even though her glands-one empty and one 1/2 full
Do you think she is having the same problem as my male staffy is going ballistic sniffing where ever she goes and is always trying to mount her.
I would take her to the vets but with the Covid-19 I wouldn't think this was an emergency

I would of said anal glands, Katy's leak occasionally (usually when she's sat on my lap ) but that's definitely fishy! Not quite sure with grass/mould smell

Definitely not fishy, its a really repulsive smell. i will have to take a look and try to use a little pressure on the outside of the anus - if this doesn't work then there is only one other way to do this plastic apron/ rubber cloths and to remember to place myself at the side of her NOT directly in front. "wish me luck"

Any unexplained smell should be reported to your vet, especially in a hitch.
Although spaying reduces the chance of pyometra, there's such a thing called 'stump pyometra' which affects the area where the womb was removed. It can be just as dangerous as ordinary pyometra. I'm not saying it's likely in this case, but worth mentioning to the vet.

When the vet expressed the glands last time, did the smell go away?

Re: Horrendous smell from my 7 year old Lucy
Hi gillybrent., The smell did go away when glands were expressed, but it is now happening regular each month and my dog Franky is following her about like a wagon attached to a train - (if you catch my drift ) and is always sniffy where she had been laying in the house or rushing over to smell her pee outside then urinating over it.
I intend to call the vets today to get more advise before I try to start tackling it myself - I'm really hoping that they might see her even if I have to leave her at the waiting room door?

Hey Sue,
Never had problems with the dogs anal glands so cant comment. How did you get on at the vets? Did you manage to get her seen?

Re: Horrendous smell from my 7 year old Lucy
Sorry for the late reply .. I had issue with a water stop-cap under the sink causing a bid of damage!
We took Lucy to the vets on Monday- nurse came out to the car park to collect her - any interaction with the vet herself was over the phone after treatment was given.
Both anus glands were full but easily emptied - It could be just a one-off occurrence, if not having to take her every 2-3 months won't be a hardship in seeing the vet nurse who is apt in clearing the glands herself. ( I did mention if I could do this but they advised not to as it can me very messy?
Now our Lucy is content and Franky has lost interest in her

That's good!
I would agree with the nurse - doing it yourself can be VERY messy & VERY stinky!

Good to hear that the problem was relatively easily resolved.
