Dog Food Supplement for puppy

Post by Eclipse Fri Dec 27 2019, 07:18

Hi All I have an 8wk old Staffy girl who is on Bakers puppy food and she seems to like that so I don't see a need to change it at the moment but I would like to know if there are any supplements I can add to her food to help build
strong bones and teeth and just generally give her a good start in life.

Any suggestions would be great.

Hi.

Unfortunately , the first thing I must say is please get your pup OFF Bakers. It is probably the worst food going. I'm not criticising or having a go, but it really is terrible.

Secondly, if your pup is getting a good quality food you won't need supplements for a good few years, and then only joint support supplements probably.

If you want, we'll happily give you a few ideas for alternative foods.

It's full of unnecessary additives and colours. Some of those colours have been shown to cause hyperactivity.

It has an extremely low meat content. There are plenty of other, similar priced foods that are better. Have a look at the allaboutdogfood.com site and compare their scores.

You'll see that Bakers scores a maximum of 25%, and mainly 10-17%, whereas (for example) Millies Wolfheart scores mainly 80%.

Sorry for the late reply Gilly, had company the last couple of days but things are back to normal now.

That's a real eye opener about Bakers food, would never have though super markets could sell something that bad so thanks very much for bringing it to my attention. The breeder put her on it so that's why I have her on it now,  I shall change it to something better.

Being disabled i'm on a tight budget here so cant afford the best stuff
but would like to get her on some good food.

What do you think about Skinner's Field & Trial Puppy food ?

EDIT-
I cant post a link to it because I am new here but it scores %64 on all about dog food website.

I don’t have any experience of Skinner’s food but a quick search seems to give positive reviews.
Please transition onto this new feed over a week to avoid unsettling your pup‘s tummy and feed according to how your pup looks, not by feeding guide

Skinners isn't a bad food & I've known dogs that do well on it.

Just transition slowly, as already said. You shouldn't need to add any supplements, but you can always add a teaspoon of salmon oil a couple of times a week to help with a glossy coat, or even some sardines in oil.
