Feeding extra fibre with kibble ?
Been looking at different (grain free) kibbles and they generally have between 3-5% fibre which seems little to me. My girls also like to “graze grass” so I’m wondering if I couldn’t add some fibre.
But what, what form and what quantity ?
I’m guessing the best bet is to go towards vegetables and the obvious ones are carrot, green beans, broccoli.
But raw or cooked ? Carrots can be grated raw I suppose.
Tinned beans ok ? Cooked broccoli ?

Re: Feeding extra fibre with kibble ?
My PJ loves a chunk of raw carrot, once or twice a day as opposed to the usual treats - hasn't affected her stools either.
Nifty are your gals on Raw or tinned meat with kibble?? I always give my gal a desert spoon of tinned with her 'complete' food - mixed in she wolfs it down and licks the bowl clean - all wheat free of course.

Neither really, from the moment that kibble is *supposed* to be a complete and balanced feed.
But, they get added tinned sardines, coconut oil, bit of minced beef or boiled chicken on average once every other evening meal. Sometimes a hard boiled egg but had a few nasty surprises after feeding raw eggs, unfortunately.

Re: Feeding extra fibre with kibble ?
Sounds like a good varied but complete diet Nifty
Once PJ is older and on adult food I do tend to similar, used to give mine mackerel, tuna etc once a week - did at one time feed them raw but it’s difficult IMO compared to the complete foods now which are really good. Plus adding the little ‘fresh’ items such as fish etc - always been blessed with healthy dogs as a result
Hey Mia, not sure if you meant me with your post? X Carrots are only given as treats, not really a fixed part of PJs diet
If your post wants for me, we’ll then I’ll shut up!

Re: Feeding extra fibre with kibble ?
Yeah I know Inez, it certainly does swell up for sure - that said it also become digested pretty quickly in their system - so I believe - and I do give the meaty and fishy extras as a variant for their pallets and to ensure they’re getting the right oils etc.
May go back to it (raw) one day, just not set up for it at mine - when I’m working I pay a dog sitter to come round so I’d need to find the right one to do the raw diet in my absence...
So far so good with mine anyhoo - FIRM believer in our digs looking and feeling good, fit, healthy and happy with good structure - then we must be doing something right, raw diets included!!!

Well yes its a learning curve and I know that "blues" have extremely major skin probs due to breeding and such like also colour dilution so guess its different for every individual x

I understand and that’s linked to my kibble test I posted about a while back

Not all kibble swells up and not everyone can/should/wants to go raw or barf.
I believe it’s better to feed quality kibble than feed unbalanced raw, especially with hygiene considerations so very important with raw/barf !
What veg did you add to your raw ?

Re: Feeding extra fibre with kibble ?
He has pretty much most veg mashed in with it and it seems to suit him so will stick with it I have no problem with kibble its just a choice I have made he has lost weight also which I am pleased about due to his bad arthiritic elbow and the vet was very pleased with him last time we went ,,,,, like everything what suits one does not suit anotherNifty staffy wrote:Inez Maria wrote: what put me off dried complete is when I dropped one in washing up water one day and my god it swelled up twice size at that point I thought what is it doing to his insides.....

Carrot, cabbage, sprouts, green beans etc are all good. You can give carrots whole (if they don't try to swallow the whole thing!), chopped, sliced - pretty much any way you like.
I wouldn't go for beans (pulses) of any sort as they have been linked to heart problems in dogs (jury's still out, but best to err on the side of caution!). Broccoli, raw, is also not good, but cooked is fine. Fruit (if they like it) can also be a good fibre source, believe it or not, because they don't fully digest them & they bind with the normal food to ease digestion. Obviously not grapes, raisins etc for obvious reasons.

My boy has a spoonful of 'Protexin Veterinary Pro-Fibre for Dogs and Cats' with every meal (twice a day). He's had that for about four years now. Really good stuff.
