Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
Unless there's a medical reason, then no. What's the point?
Is he uncontrollable?
Is he agressive?
Does he constantly escape & wander the neighbourhood?
Will he be allowed to mate indiscriminately?
If "no" to each of the above - why do you want him done?

He has started to be more and more aggressive in the house towards people.....mainly family members that visit and to be fair im the stable one in my family so you can imagine lol No but on a serious note he has started to growl and show teeth to kids in the family when they are playing which is not acceptable.
He won't be allowed to mate but the other day he did eat through his lead in 3 seconds lucky there wasn't any distractions at the time e.g. another dog or a rabbit etc as he might not of come back.
I've only had him 5 weeks and in that time I haven't met any bitches who are in heat so unsure if he will jump the fence etc.
I've had several so called power breeds and if they were all in the wild together Blue would be the alpha by a mile.....I think allot of his problems are cos he is constantly trying to assert himself as the alpha.
One min he will sit at the top of the stairs and wait for me to get to the bottom and say "come on then" then he will run down.....showing respect for the alpha (me) then 5 mins later he will spray on my jacket like he owns it and he is the alpha.
He has also become more and more aggressive towards male dogs.....before he might of just growled, now he is lunging at them.
He is now about 13 months so don't know if he is starting the teenage thing and trying to see how far he can push me or if its a testosterone thing....which even being a male would rather get him castrated than to have to have him put down and some kid to be seriously hurt.

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
Im going to disagree with everyone else and say yes u should defo have him done....
If ur not going to breed him then why shouldnt he have them off plus it will eliminate testiclar cancer. It may or may not help with the agression issues, if it does help great but it if it doesnt then ur in no worse a situation....
This whole if its not broke dont fix it thing is in my opinion not a great way of looking at things....if blue was to get into the wrong hands (which could happen) he could be used as a breeding machine espeacially as he's blue. I really dont see how people can argue a case for not neutering and spaying dogs, its one of the only things that will help are over bred breed.
Ty was done at 6 months and I will defo be getting Kaos done as soon as he is old enough.
I think u defo should get blue done bluestaffblue and hopefully it may help with some of the agression/dominence issues!

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
If you are getting agression issues, then castration may or may not help. Ask your vet if they can inject him to mask the hormones & see whether castration is likely to change his behaviour.
When all is said & done, it's up to you & nobody here can tell you what to do. Any one of us could be totally wrong!
How old is he by the way? I read recently that if you castrate a dog under 18 months of age, he may never 'grow up' properly & would be a constant 'teenager'. If you castrate after about 2 years old, it makes little or no difference to temperament.
It's a dilemma. All you can do is read as much as you can re: the pro's & con's on the internet & make your own decision.

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
it's a hard one there good reason's on both sides, only thing i'm worry about is the cancer bit but they still can get other type of cancer...
Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
i had a staffy for 14yrs i got him neutered when he was 2 yrs and it made a big difference to his demeanor, he changed completely from being a nasty piece of work into a big lazy baby

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
Yeah the health thing i think is pretty even.....increased chances in some area.....decreased chances in other (the decreased in areas seem to be allot easier to find info on and advertised more)
Im just hoping and looking at the fact the less testosterone the less chance he will continue to push and challenge constantaly to be the alpha male.....and continue to do the alpha male bad traits like spraying indoors.....being aggressive towards males both dog and human etc
Deep down I know I have to do it to reduce the risk of him having to be put to sleep through bitting someone or seriously hurting someones dog....but the guilt is amazing lol

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
One thing to remember, though, is that the testosterone will stay in his body for up to 6 - 8 months after castration, so don't expect a miracle change in behaviour. Whatever you decide to do, you must tackle the agressive behaviour NOW.
Bearing in mind that castration may or may not have an effect on behaviour, every time he shows teeth or growls you must step in with a firm, deep "No!" and if necessary remove him from the room. If he growls/shows teeth, whoever he has shown them to must turn away from him and if it's during play, then all play must immediately stop. If it's food agression, then try feeding him by hand (messy & time consuming, but it works) a little at a time. Once he's ok with one person doing this, gradually introduce all the other family members to doing it. That way he'll know that he's lower in the family pack than everyone else because they all control his food.
At his age, it could be teenager-ish behaviour, but as you do not know his full history it's difficult to be sure.
Good luck - it's a tough decision.
P.S. You may have to accept that he just doesn't like other dogs. You can learn to live with it - I did with Bandit - and as long as you have a strong recall & a 6th sense when there are other dogs near, you'll be able to cope.

Im not sure about the never growing up thing Ty was done at 6/7 months and he's just starting now at 1 to mature and i can notice the difference but again i suppose it depends on the individual dog. I also heared that neutering a dog over the age of 2 (i heared 3) doesnt really help but who knows!
As caryll says i think that isrespective of wether u get him chopped or not the issues you've described with blues aggression needs to be addressed now. Dog aggression is one thing but human aggression is a completey different kettle of fish and is not acceptable!
As has already been said it is up 2 u at the end of the day there are plenty of pros and cons for both sides but i would say uve got nothing to lose but neutring.....Good Luck mate.... x

everyone got differnet opinions on their pet, i'm not saying my way is the right way or anything but i treat my dog how i would like to be treat if i was a dog or how i would treat my kids if i had any,
like some will keep their dogs outside and some will let their dog sleep on there beds...
what i'm saying is dog can be more than just dogs to people they part of the family..... well i will shut up now

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
At the end of your day it is totally down to you.
I personally will always have my dogs/bitches done. Some dogs, not all dogs who don't get to mate get frustrated - take the testosterone away and you don't have the frustration.
You also have to remember a male can smell a bitch in season for up to 3 miles away - if your dog is the type of dog to get frustrated by that, it will drive him mad, so mad, he may try escaping to try and find her.

I also agree in the respect that i love them 2 bits and i would never or could never mistreat them but in my house the kids are kids and the dogs are the dogs. They are most defo not allowed upstairs on beds or the main sofas etc they no there place which is below us and the kids. Its funny how although everyone obviously loves there dogs how people see them differently....do u get what i mean? Like Steve treats his dogs like he would treat his kids where as me, although the dogs are a huge part of our family they are not treated at all like the kids but are treated as dogs.

I'm like you. My dog means everything to me, but when the chips are down, he is my dog & my kids are my kids. They are different & should be treated that way. I think it's a mistake to try and treat an animal like a human. You can reason & explain with a child/partner. You can't do that with a dog. The dog has to understand his place in the family, which he will do happily if there's consistency.

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
my dogs do understand their place like my sister, nephew knows their places i'm the boss..... like my dad is my boss lmao that how we have brought up pitbull before they got banned and now staffie, work fine for us.

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
well like i said everyone has got their own ways, I dont really like how people lock dogs up in a room that i wouldn't sit in or in crates for hours at a time i think that is plain wrong if other people want to do that, that's upto them,
i think if you bring a dog home you need to be able to trust them like you would a family member and give them full access of the home . yea you will have to teach him or her what's right and wrong at first some dogs will get it straight away some may take abit longer.

Yea your right steve everyone has there own ways, its whatever suits you and your way of life....Completley agree about cruelty theres no excuse for that. At the end of the day as long as our dogs are healthly warm well exercised and loved what more can we ask for!

We crate Dempsey for his own health. It's all very well saying "it might take a bit longer" to train a dog what they can & can't do, but bullies are well known for swallowing things they shouldn't, especially when young. He is only crated at night & if we go out for an hour or so. A Bull Terrier will, literally, swallow anything that will fit in their mouths, even if it's too big for their throat/intestines etc - then they choke to death or get a blockage which can also result in death.

Re: Should I get Blue Castrated?
Bless u youngkaiser! lol But as i said we all bring our dogs up differently and theres no right or wrong way as long as there all healthy and loved! But just dont just shut off completley to the idea as he's still fairly young and could still benefit at some point from having the chop if he needs it. My friend was of simillar opinion to you....Her staff literally turned two and started displaying very 'male' habits licking other dogs wee, howling and trying to escape, she took him to the field for his usual walk where she let him off lead like she always does and he literally darted through the hedges and was gone, she got a phone call a couple of hours later from a woman in our village who had him safe. He had run into her garden and mated with her on heat jack russell, luckily the woman we new and she was not to angry, she terminated the pregnacy and spayed the bitch at the same time and needless to say my friend book nelson in the very same day to be chopped lol.
We never crated Ty but he doesnt have free access to the house when we are out he is confined to our back porch where his bed and toys are he also has a dog flap and acess to a small secure graveled area ('the poo garden' as my 2 year old calls it lol). We decided to crate train kaos as we always keep them separate when we are not about, he started off hating it but now he goes in perfectly happily at night and when we go out. We made sure it was a nice big one and litterally fills up the whole space underneath the stairs and is full of his toys and his beloved kong lol. Crate training has worked brilliantly for us and i would reccommend it to anyone!!
