The Texan Empty The Texan

Post by Hoges Mon May 15 2017, 13:42

Hi Folks,

I'm new here and popping in to say hi. My pup Tex has just turned 1 and over the past month or so has developed some aggression towards other dogs that hadn't existed previously. He was well socialised when younger and was pretty submissive when playing with other dogs, so it has come as a surprise that he has a couple of incidents where he has turned on dogs when playing.

Wondering if anyone has been through this and what to do to iron out these behavioural traits. We don't want an aggressive dog on our hands that we need to keep in solitary confinement.. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers
Ash

Hi and welcome from me and mine wave

Sorry to hear you're having problems. It's a fairly common one, so you're not alone!

There's one bit in your post that might explain something...

Submissive might indicate worried - it's unusually for staffie boys to be submissive otherwise (in my experience). Staffies can be worriers anyway and for some reason some dogs are just born a bit more fretful. So what Tex is probably doing is saying 'I'm not happy about that, leave me alone'. You will probably find, if you look really closely, that he gives signs first. It's worth looking for those and acting before he snaps.

I would not ask him to interact with other dogs that he doesn't know, especially full on ones, and give him time to chill in sight of them to get his confidence back.

Welcome to the forum, Tex is a very handsome boy. Do you have a friend with a calm dog to do some nice relaxed on lead walks with? Then build up from there
