Hiya and welcome. Have a read through a lot of the topics they will really help. Puppy's do mouth and nip, and especially as yours hasn't had the best start to life yet, you don't mention other litter mates being locked with him, to learn from. But he is so young he will learn, patience.love and training.Xx they learn what you put in, and are very quick to do so also x

Re: newbie needed help
Hi and welcome from me and Suki. That's perfectly normal for a puppy. They usually start teething in the 4-6 month age. Make sure they have plenty of good things to chew. Kongs with a vegetable mush inside or frozen carrots worked for me. They explore the world with their mouth so they will chew anything. If you have something you are attached to put it out of reach.
For the nipping turn around walk away and ignore them they hate that. Be patient and consistant and he will catch on.

Play biting basically, but it obviously must to discouraged, as they hands are not toys.
I would scream louder, as if you have been REALLY hurt.
Then get up, end the game, walk away, no eye contact.
Repeat.
Eventually the dog will get the message.

Hi & welcome!
Can't really add anything to the above, except give him the love he so richly deserves! With patience & consistency he'll soon settle in & be the best friend you've ever had!

Re: newbie needed help
Hi & welcome!
My experience of Staffy's is a highly intelligent dog that is eager to learn and are especially motivated by food treats! All puppies get over excited, giddy and they all nip and mouth. As long as you set down the boundaries now and be consistent. A sharp 'ah' coinciding with a finger bite simulation technique (not hard, you don't want to hurt the pup) put firm enough to let the pup know you mean business, (it's the one that Cesar Millan uses if you've ever watched dog whisperer or read his books) then ignoring the puppy until settled. This is what a mother dog would do to discipline unwanted behaviour, so why should their human parent treat them another way? Here's Cesar Millan's Website I agree with Cesar's motto 'Exercise -> Discipline -> Affection' (in that order) then you have a happy balanced friend!
I would also start puppy classes and socializing the pup where ever and whenever you can. Puppy classes will also socialize the pup as well as help you train the pup basic commands that are needed for safety. The trick to training in behaviours and commands is patience. Clickers are really good for this but you have to get the timing spot on followed by reward. Wait patiently without words to start for the dog to complete the desired behaviour, I prefer to introduce hand signals first before the word so that if your dog strays to far, a dog's eye sight will always see your hand signals even if he cannot hear you. So for instance when training the pup to 'sit' put a treat in your hand and use that hand to signal when the dogs bum touches the floor click at that moment and reward. Do this a few more times then add in the word. I have noticed also that staffy's, collies and gsd's don't take as long to train a command and they quickly follow on to learning a new one fast.
This is a great place to come for advice and help, everyone is friendly and supportive here and will always give you the best advice they can, but I do recommend puppy classes.
It's nice to meet you and I wish you and your little pup all the best!

Re: newbie needed help
hi we r having the same problem with our 10 week old pup coco. All you can do is reinforce the the behavier is not exceptable. I've found making a sh noise and a quick tap her on the neck as a mom dog would,it seams to be working unlike the toilet training she hates to go out side.she has even done a poo right in front of the open backdoor and trotted of quite proud of herself.

Hi I see your pup is only 10weeks old so I am guessing you have had her a couple of weeks tops now? Can I ask how many times a day you take her out into the garden? I have found that constantly monitoring a pup for 'the signs' (sniffing around, trying to find a place to go pee or poop, getting restless etc) is invaluable and taking her out into the garden every couple of hours during the day time to start (building up to 3 then 4 etc) or whenever you see 'the signs' pick her straight up, take her to the middle of the garden and wait patiently, especially after meals, she has got to go sometime, it may take a while or even a couple of days trying but don't give up. What you instill now shapes her future thought processes and behaviours. When she finally goes toilet outside, say a word (for example 'pee pee') as she is toileting, once she is done, give her tons of praise and fuss and tell her what a good girl she is, even take some treats out to reward the desired behaviour. Do this every time she goes out side and ignore the inside mistakes, she will realize that she only get praise, fuss and treats if she goes outside to the toilet and it will click within a week or two tops and you won't have anymore accidents to clean in the house. But you have to put her first and spot the signs, keep your eye on her or you will miss them. Investing your time and effort now will pay off and a few weeks down the road you will be laughing about this and how easy it was to sort, I promise! Hope this helps, it has always worked for me! Coco is beautiful, all the best!

Re: newbie needed help
thanks 4 the advise. we have had her only a few days as her owner couldnt keep her due to ill heath. we take her out after every meal and when she wakes up along with my older dog missey. At the moment the main problem is the weather i can put her out but if its raining she wants to come straight back in. I also tend to miss alot of the signs that she needs to go as im potty training my 2 year old at the same time. i think u r right that i have to concentrate on her so i might enlist my eldest to help keep an eye.... again a big thankyou
