Are these puppies Staffies?

Hi there,
On Sunday I was hiking on a nature trail and came across two abandoned pups.
People have suggested that they look like staffies (including the vet) but they're approximately 10 weeks old and only weigh 1.3 kilos. Could they be staffie mixes? If so, what with?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

It's obviously hard to say without seeing pics, but to be honest even then it can be difficult to tell with young pups as they can change so much as they grow.

What's happening with them, are you keeping them?

I'm looking after them. They have serious mange and parasites and are emaciated so I'm doing all the meds and treatments until they're 100% healthy. Yesterday and today was hard on them....I've never seen so many worms! They must have been in agony!

And show us pics when the 7 days are up. Maybe they are just small for their age. I can hardly bear to think of them full of worms, mange & being abandoned. I can't comprehend how anyone could neglect & abandon innocent animals

What a sad start to their lives, fortunately you were there to help. Sorry you can't post pictures, for some reason the forum randomly stops some people from posting pictures in the first 7 days. I have looked to see if I can alter it but it doesn't look like I can.

Oh the poor little mites how anyone can abandon puppies is beyond belief So glad you found them

Soon as I saw them my heart just melted! I've never seen anything more pitiful!
Hopefully by the end of the 7 days when I post pics they'll be looking a little better

This has really touched my heart. I feel honoured to have my jack Russell & my staffy pup. I just can't understand the cruel people in the world. I'll keep a look out for updates from you. What colour are the little pups? I'm so so happy you found them in time. Thank goodness you went on that hike

The poor little innocent pups. How can anyone do something like that. It's so lucky that you found them and are treating then kindly. I dread to think where they could have ended up. Can't wait to see pics!

I really have no idea about their colour as their mange is pretty severe. They don't really have much in the way of hair but something tells me they'll be bridle or grey!
I can't wait to show the transformation when it happens

Oh poor little things, that does sound like bad mange. When I was a child my parents rescued a large lab cross who was a stray. His mange was horrendous but it was amazing when his beautiful golden coat came thru. Thank you for caring for these babies

By the way, you should report these pups to the dog warden if you haven't already. For the time being they could be reclaimed by their previous owner and you need to make sure that ownership is correctly passed to you. Sadly, the fact that they were abandoned in a dreadful state would not stop the owner having a legal right to them.

By law, you must report strays to the dog warden even if you want to keep them. It is possible (but in this case I think unlikely) that they'd be kept in kennels for 7 days to see if the they are claimed.

Especially if you found them locally to you I'd advise you to do this to avoid someone later claiming 2 now healthy pups as theirs. Sadly it does happen.

I'd keep pictures of the state they are in just incase. I'm sure the owner would be worried about being prosecuted so will keep quiet but u never know

My bad! I forgot to mention I live in Cyprus! We have a HUGE problem here with people buying bully breeds, breeding them and then dumping unsold pups in fields tied in bags. My own rescue is a 9 year old pitbull who was kept as a guard dog tied to a tree his whole life and then left to starve to death when the owner got bored of him. When he finally surrendered him to a neighbour, I adopted him legally. He's had cancer twice and has horrible hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis from the abuse of being malnourished so long, but after 6 surgeries and chemo he's doing great! From 17kg when I found him, his weight has now doubled! I can't wait to show pictures of my boy.

What does your lad think of the pups, or are you keeping the separate to avoid infection?

Sorry for the late response...these puppies are a 24/7 commitment! They have secondary bacterial infections from the mange and parasites so making them comfortable requires medicated shampoos and coconut oil rub downs!

I've lived here since 2005 and unfortunately i haven't seen any improvement in animal treatment these past 12 years

Sounds like you really have your hands full, good on you for helping the pups.that must be frustrating, I hope there are other kind people like yourself making a difference

For some reason half my post got deleted and i only just noticed it now! That happened a few days ago when i posted from my tablet too....i wrote a long reply but only half of it got posted!

I was saying how my boy (Tyson) is still immunocompromised from the chemo and since i dont know whether the puppies have sarcoptic or demodetic mange (the vet said it makes no difference since the treatment is the same and she's convinced theyre both contageous) i dont want to risk him contacting it! Hopefully when theyre healed all three can play together

Fingers crossed that happens, it would be a really fantastic outcome.

They were surviving off of the feces of other animals, which is why they had so many parasites!

This is my first rescue...my boy...tied to a tree for 8 years. Now I make sure he gets the best of everything to compensate!

When I went to visit him in the pound he was such a serious mean looking dog but from the second he came home he's been all goofy smiles ever since! Whatever I'm going through, that smile lights up my life
