taking a pill
How do I get Duke to take a pill, usually I don't have a problem, but these must smell because he won't have them. I have tried wrapping them in ham, chicken and cheese, cutting them up, which makes it worse, he just spits them out, he did chew one and it made his mouth all frothy and salivate.
Help please.
Help please.

Re: taking a pill
Our preferred substance to hide pills in is Brie - nice and smelly, but also squidgy so you can completely cover the pill and hide the smell as well as the taste.
I then have a fairly guaranteed method of getting them to take it. It's a huge game, fun and something to look forward too! The moment you introduce the 'have to' feel, they'll resist. This way, they want their treat! I've taught all mine to catch so to get pills down I lob a couple of unadulterated treats, then slip in the one with the pill. It really is as simple as that.
Teaching a dog to catch is quite easy and now might be a good time to start (if Duke doesn't know already). Hold a treat fairly above his nose, high enough that he has to look up but can't quite reach it. Then drop it. The first couple of times he might not know what's going to happen but all of our dogs have caught on pretty quickly - open mouth, treat falls in. I've taught a retriever, a lurcher, a lab and 3 staffy crosses. The lurcher was the least proficient but all the others got to never missing a catch.
I know you need it now, but him might be able to learn it really quickly (i.e. in one or two sessions). Teach him without a pill first, just as a brilliant fun game. Then you should be able to slip the doctored treat in amongst the others when he's not expecting it. Always do it in the middle, with pill-less treats either side, so that it's hidden and not the last thing, just in case he does get a taste of it.
This way, not only do you eliminate the unpleasant expectation, they generally also swallow the treat (plus pill) before they even know what it is. Make sure the pill parcel is as small as you can make it while covering the actual pill, as if it's too big it is more likely to get chewed.

In that respect in lucky with Misty. She's such a little gannett that she will eat a pill by itself. That dog will eat anything!

That's because Mia knew you would never hurt her and she could trust you. To be fair Misty would take food from anyone I think

Re: taking a pill
Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I managed to get him to have them last night and this morning by cutting into 4 and then hiding them in a tiny bit of philladelpia cheese, it was all I could find I my fridge!
I do play games with his kibble before his feed, training games and muzzle training, (in case of emergencies) but it only works when he's got an appetite. 3 days ago he turned his nose up at a piece of chicken, so it will be easier now hes getting his appetite back.
Going to get some brie as it's not so sloppy as philly
