My girl Khaleesi our staffy x boxer
Hi, I'm Vicki. My partner Nye and I just got our gorgeous 1 year old rescue Staffy x boxer Khaleesi yesterday and she is great! She's very well behaved, gentle and active when out but super relaxed at home and super cuddly :-). She is a rescue but I think she's been looked after really well and trained pretty well previously, her recall is pretty good though does get distracted around other dogs (who she loves) and she pulls a bit on the lead, other than that she's absolutely perfect.
How do you guys wear your dogs out on a walk, she won't chase a ball, she runs after a rope I throw for her and id Ok at retrieving it but I think she gets bored ha and comes back because of treats. I heard bull breeds like more chewey toys and bones etc rather than retrieving a ball, is this true? Sorry for the daft questions it's just all over dogs I've known are quite happy to chase a ball and it's a good way to wear them out. Saying that, I'm a mature student at uni and spend a lot of time at home and plan on taking her out on 3 x 1 hour walks every day, maybe she won't need a ball/toy to chase if she's out for this long with me? We're pretty active also and plan on taking her running with us sometimes if she's up for it and hiking on the weekends.
We've got her loads of toys but she's not interested in most of them apart from a snowman squeaky soft toy that she carries around and snuggles up with her, it's super cute and she's so gentle with it she doesn't ever squeak it!
It's very hard to keep a white dog white in torrential rain... ;-)
Here are some pics of out absolutely gorgeous girl!

Wow, she's gorgeous
Well done on the rescue. Do you walk her off lead? That makes for a more tiring walk as they do lots of investigating but obviously you'll need a fairly good level of recall for that. Does she chase sticks? My Flo does and then ate them so we invested in a Kong safe Stix which she loves and would, given the chance, reduce to pieces
My girl doesn't chase balls either so Khaleesi isn't that odd and I would think that 3 X one hour walks will soon make her tired.

Re: My girl Khaleesi our staffy x boxer
Yep I walk her off lead, she has pretty good recall, but does get distracted with other dogs about, she is very friendly with dogs but I'm a first time dog owner and makes me nervous when she doesn't come back when called because she's spotted another dog, especially one that is on a lead (where in a place where you would normally let a dog off lead) incase they aren't friendly with other dogs. I put her back on lead when I see another dog on theirs as her recall isn't spot on yet. I am seeing someone on Thursday though to try and help further with recall and lead walking though so hopefully this shouldn't take too long to sort :-).
I've not tried throwing a stick for her yet, she does chase a pull rope that I throw for her though, sometimes she brings it back and I give her a treat, other times she just drops it somewhere then I walk over to it, show her the rope and then give her a treat. Is that the right way to go about teaching her to bring it back? ha I'm just trying it out :-).
And thank you! We think she is lush! :-D

So this game is called fetch, my Flo taught me this!! I throw the Stix, she chases it then relocates it for me to go fetch
You're spot on with putting the lead on when meeting other on lead dogs, it's the bane of some people's lives having off lead dogs rush up to their on lead dog. You only reward when she does what you want her to, by rewarding when you pick it up where she left it gives her the idea that that is what gets her treats and so you are reinforcing that behaviour. Only reward when she brings it back to you

Re: My girl Khaleesi our staffy x boxer
Welcome from me and mine!
Well done on adopting, such a gorgeous dog. And I love her name.
Staffies love all sorts of things. I certainly have 2 ball obsessives but Chaos will (eventually) get bored with playing fetch, whereas Millie will go on forever! They love chewing things too. It's a question of trying various things to find out what Khaleesi likes best, or when she likes something more.
It's very, very early days for her so what you see now might develop as she relaxes. Try not to overdo things for the first week or two, just let her settle in at her own pace. And I absolutely agree about having her on the lead with other dogs around. It's not only her needs but those of others that need to be taken into consideration.
Also, don't get hung up on the idea of tiring her out. Some dogs, including lots of staffies, are like Duracell bunnies. As long as she is getting plenty of exercise it doesn't really matter that she's not flopped on the floor panting afterwards.
Fetch... I have another definition for you. We had a retriever who found the concept of bringing the ball/toy back as well. We'd throw, he'd go to get it and pick it up. 'Fetch', we'd urge, at which point he'd drop it, we'd sigh and go to pick it up to try again. Very quickly, 'fetch' meant drop it for it to be thrown and for the rest of his life 'fetch' for Mungo meant 'drop', anything. I hasten to say my training skills have improved since then!
