Why did you pick a staffy ?

Curious, what made you pick a Staffy ?

I have loved Boxers & Rottys my whole life, always wanted a Boxer (hubby previously had a Rotty) there was never any question that was the breed I was getting, but when I was allowed to get a dog (rental property) we had a small'ish back yard and I knew that wouldn't work with a Boxer so got my Google on and Staffys ticked all the boxes for me - little did I know he'd destroy my entire yard, including the underground termite protection system and have a BBQ knob fettish !! Best decision I ever made, man I love my boy !!!! Needless to say we now live on acreage approx. 70 miles from the City !

My son picked a Staffy and I was a bit dubious so read as much as I could about the breed and meet some adult trained staffies and decided if we put in the effort with training and socialising it would be a good fit for us. I'm now on my third girl and wouldn't choose another breed. I love their sense of fun, loyalty and intelligence even though sometimes it's like living with a bulldozer with digger attachments

I read the book at the library I read their character traits people orientated I was originally getting a staffy puppy and I did but due to circumstances unpreventable I gave her up one day my nana sent me an errand to my uncles girlfriends house then I met mia after the longest face wash ever the woman said she didnt want her so I went back the next week and adopted mia . little did I know how much character she had there was a lot happening in the first week with mia she had 2 baths and also a trip to the vets to be speyed. she stole my heart learned a lot about staffies over the years id never have another breed and im well prepared if I ever get another dog .as shes older now i love mia even more ever grateful for being a staffy owner

I had one when I was younger who sadly passed as they all do and then had a family so no time for a dog then one fateful day my youngest son wanted to go to the pound (Battersea) and Flo kinda chose us.

The OH was totally in agreement as she knew my first Staffy and knew how great they are and here we are more than 4 years later still laughing at the goofy things Flo gets up to

Hubby and I decided our daughter was old enough at 9 to have a do. So my hubby suggested a Staffy, but I only knew them as "dangerous dogs" and refused to have one in the house. I wanted a "handbag dog" easy to mind, nice to look at etc.. So over the following year, with plenty of research and contact with the Irish Kennel Assoc. and various telephone conversations with Staffy breeders throughout Ireland. My heart was taken with their loving and loyalty to their owners. We met Roxy's daddy and mummy before "they got together" so we knew the backgrounds and when Roxy arrived, we picked her/ no really she picked us, at 8 weeks, and collected her from her mum Jenny at 10 weeks. I've never looked back and thought we made the wrong decision.

I was brought up around German Shepherds, Border Collies and a Lurcher. I always imagined my first dog would be a German Shepherd. When I moved into my first property my girlfriend at the times brother (an unsavoury sort) asked if we wanted a dog as a moving in present. I said no, but my gf pestered me so I went round and saw the sorriest looking little dog I had ever seen. He had acquired her from a “friend”. Apparently her brother was a “fighting” staffy and they were going to use her for breeding, but when she matured her brother started attacking her and after 6 months of trying to keep them apart the owner decided to finally do the right thing and find somewhere else for her to live.

She was under weight, her ears were scarred and sore from being bitten and she had major problems with her skin. I was told she was a staffy, at the time I didn’t even know what a staffy was, I just know that she needed somewhere safe to be. Despite her health and what she had been through she was such a happy little thing, she licked my face and jumped on my lap and I was in love    I scooped her up and took her home.

We needed each other, along with everything else she had some pretty bad behavioural problems and I was at a low point in my life, so we both helped each other through, I set about training her to build her confidence up and she helped me just by being the most loving, loyal dog you could ever meet. People told me that staffies are vicious and they wouldn’t trust them, but that just made me more determined to prove to everyone what a special dog she was. Sadly she passed away this year at the age of 13 and not once in the 11 and a half years she was by my side did I ever see any form of aggression towards anyone or anything, Tizzy was a wonderful dog, she was my rock and I miss her so much.

Anyway, that’s how I discovered the breed, I love all dogs, I’ve owned a boxer and currently have a bullmastiff x dogue, but I will always have a staffy by my side, their zest for life is so inspiring and they make the world a better place.

We needed a smallish dog and hubby had fond memories of his childhood friends staff. We did about a year's worth of research and started walking twice a day to make sure we could exercise a dog properly.

One day while walking we met a stunner of a dog and it was a staff x boxer. We were dead set on a staff and then one day I saw Misty on a website and literally fell in love and that was that!

Thanks Emma, she was a beauty, but I think they all are I can see so much of Tizzy in my new little pup Hugo, they're just the funniest, cutest little monkeys and never fail to make you smile

That is a moving story Dave, so glad you found each other and had many years of happiness

I hassled my hubby as I always wanted a dog but working full time we agreed we would wait. Anyway I started working for myself so said I could have a dog now I looked at spaniels, then saw a staffie x cocker but they messed me about Hubby kept going on about jrt's but I don't like them. He spotted this picture of a pup in the fridayad & said she looked pretty & had character. Well after meeting her she just had to come home with us She was shut in a kitchen & got slapped a lot by a 3yr old girl. She was taken from her mum at 5wks old & they only had her a wk & wanted to get rid of her  She was a very needy pup but has turned into the most loveable loyal dog I have ever met

God I have loved reading everyones stories, thank you all for sharing ! Dave I'm so sorry for your loss, they truly do steal our hearts don't they!! I love seeing everyones pics and updates too

They do steal our hearts. I got a little sad this morning when Hugo came running through to my bedroom with a sock in his mouth, Tizzy used to do this when she was younger and would get really restless if she couldn’t find a sock to bring to me, I used to have to go find her one so she could get it in her mouth and then drop it in front of me!

Seeing little Hugo wiggling around, swishing his tail with a sock in his mouth really reminded me of her and brought a tear to my eye, but the sadness soon turns to happiness when you have a little one licking your face in a way a Staffy only knows, how his little tongue moves so fast I have no idea but I bet a Staffy’s LPS (licks per second) beats any other breed out there!

I know this is an older thread but l hope it's OK to add my story.
I have always had dogs and have had in my past jack russel, red setter, border collie x, golden retriever, red border collie and then a staffie. Our staffie Mason was the most loving, loyal and trustworthy of all of them but sadly he got epilepsy at the age of 4. It did not respond to the medication and kept getting worse, with cluster fits. He sadly passed just before his 6th birthday. That was 2 years ago and I still miss him so much.
For a few months I was without a dog but life seemed empty so we got another staffie puppy, our cute little Duke, now 15 months old and by some strange coincidence he was born on the same day as our previous staffie on the 20th May. I can't imagine life without a staffie.

Of course!!!! & i hope more add to it So sorry for your loss But seems with Duke it was meant to be!!

I'd been thinking of getting a pooch to add to the one man family and after some research, found out that there are far too many neglected staffys out there. So, one day my friend and I went to look at a staffy that someone was selling and as soon as I saw her (she was in a mess, smelly, underweight, bad skin and bare patches on her feet) I knew I couldn't leave her.

Nearly two years on and despite the amount of times I have had to clean up after she has been bin scavenging and all the poop, pee and puke accidents, the vet bills and changing the car to an estate just for her, I wouldn't change her for anything. Plus, any future gf's that come along have to now be dog friendly and any inkling of having to choose and it will always be Nita. :-)

Me and my wife have always had rescues (4 and counting) and two of those have been Jack Russell's, I love Jacks because of their "nutty" nature and loyalty. We lost our last Russell called Nancy and the wife wanted to get another but Nancy was one of those special dogs who really get under your skin and I was besotted with her for the eight years she was with us I was totally devastated and swore we would never have another dog as I couldn't cope when the time came to say goodbye. The sight of a 62yr old lorry driver sobbing his heart out wasn't pretty! If we got another JR it would only remind me of Nancy.  A few weeks later and I'm missing Nancy so much I started looking at some re-homing websites but I was struggling to take on the commitment. Despite never owning a staffy I've always had a soft spot for the breed and a few friends with them say they will only ever have a staffy as they are that special. Fast forward a few weeks and our girl Mollie popped up on the Shpock website of all places and her picture looking up at the camera with a sad face and those beautiful different coloured eyes and my heartstrings didn't so much as twang they snapped. I knew if I told my wife she would just say no outright as she was still set on another JR and had the usual staffy prejudices so against my better judgment I went out and bought Mollie on the quiet! Not the thing to do I know but I was in love bringing her home the expected bombshell went off with shouts of get it out of here, she frightens me etc but within a couple of hours Mollie had won her heart too. She's only been with us for a few weeks but already I can tell she is going to be one very special little lady.

hi mary love the way you describe your staffy it so true they are the cleanest and most intelligent dog I ever had lola three she loves playing with balls but eat through them if you don't get a sturdy one nice talking to you take care adrienne
