Replacement dog
Hi,
After 9 wonderful years with my best friend he passed away on Saturday. I am completely destroyed and the only thing that's getting me through is the thought of getting a new dog.
I would like to get a dog as close to Bruce as possible. He was a very large tan and white staffy, the most gentle soul and wierdly a total coward.
Is it a mistake to get another dog the same colour and if not does the colour have much to do with the dogs personality?
Any help much appreciated.
Paul

Re: Replacement dog
Hi Paul, so sorry to hear of your loss.
I'm not sure colour has anything to do with personality. I don't think getting a new dog the same colour as Bruce would be a mistake, it is totally up to you. Sometimes it can be good to have a new dog that reminds you of your old dog, other people like to have a completely different colour new dog.
I'm sure you will find a new pal and give them a happy life.
We are here if you ever want to talk about Bruce or your new dog x

Re: Replacement dog
Hi Paul, and welcome to the group.
I'll be absolutely honest and say that you will never replace Bruce. Looking for a dog that will fit his shoes exactly will, I fear, end in disappointment as you will always be measuring your new dog against him.
Each dog is an individual. Each dog has his own unique blend of traits. There are so many fab dogs out there, be it puppy or rescue dog, that are brilliant in their own way. Find one who you can love for who he is himself. You will always love Bruce for who he was and will love your new dog for who he is.
If you're looking for a rescue, you'll be spoilt for choice and will also be doing a wonderful dog a good turn.
Good luck in your search.

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum from Flo & me.
So sorry to read of your loss, it must still be terribly raw for you right now.
There is no reason for you not to get another companion but as Liz has said above, they are all different but hold the same traits so you won't find one that fills Bruce's shoes exactly but will find one as loving and loyal I'm sure.
I got another Staffy after many years in between and the similarity is uncanny between the two, from looks to mannerisms but they are definitely not the same.
Colour makes no difference at all, good luck in your search

Re: Replacement dog
Thank you all, I am totally broken and filled sadness for the things I will never do again with my friend.
You guys are right, my thoughts were to go straight out and buy an identical looking dog and hope he would fill the hole Bruce left.
Now I think I will wait till the pain eases off a bit.
Kind regards
Paul

Hi and welcome to the forum from me and the zoo xx
So sorry for your loss. I thas been a year since I said goodbye to my best friend and I still couldn't even think of having another dog. BUT each human is different, the same as each dog is different. You will never be able to replace your boy but giving a staffy (especially a rescue one) is an amazing thing to do.
Good luck in your search! We're all here to support

Re: Replacement dog
Hi Paul. Firstly I am SO very sorry for your recent loss, I bet Bruce was an amazing loyal companion. I don't think colour has anything to do with personality (could be coincidence if it does exist) but only you can decide on what colour & when the time is right for you, I am sure you are very raw right now. We are always here for support/friendship, I hope you take the time you need to grieve and know Bruce has crossed the rainbow bridge with the best memories of a wonderful life you gave him. Look after yourself x (PS great choice considering another staffy!!! )

Re: Replacement dog
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Re: Replacement dog
Hi Paul, so sorry for your loss. I too lost one of my dogs in January and it feels bloody awful. But I will say it gets better as time goes by. Give yourself a few weeks to grieve, it is important to grieve.
When you start to feel a bit better is the time to start looking, not while you still feel very sad. You will find colour will be irrelevant and you will be drawn to a dog for it's personality. You will find a new friend soon and will be able to remember Bruce with a smile on your face.

Re: Replacement dog
Hello Paul, I am so sorry to hear of the loss of Bruce. I know exactly what you are feeling as we lost our lovely Mason 15 months ago due to epilepsy, he was not even 6 years old, and the hurt has faded but I still miss him and think about him often.
We waited 4 months before we got another, and he is a similar colour but quite a different character.
You will know when the time is right for you to get another dog, it won't replace Bruce, but it will be rewarding.
