Problems
I have a problem with my fearful staffie actually i have a number of problems if anyone can help i would be very grateful
1, He's fearful of people has been since day one. He pulls to people then barks at them when they try to stroke him.
2, He lunges at cars bikes anything that moves.
3, He doesnt like people in the house.
Apart from that he is a delight
Reggie is two in october hasnt been to classes as the classes i got him into cancelled on me. I dont drive so havent been able to take him to a different one.If anyone knows of any good training books they can recommend/
He is not neutered as i was reading up on it and it says fearful dogs should be done when they mature around 3 years because if done before that it can make them worse.

Re: Problems
When was day one? As a pup or an older dog?
You say he pulls to people them barks when they try to stroke him - are you letting him pull to them ?
Lunging at cars/bikes suggests he is trying to let out energy - its very common in collies that are from working lines but not worked. How much exercise is your dog getting really?
What does he do when people come into the house?
A fearful dog who is also contending with sexual hormones will be much harder to handle. Personally i would neuter him now, and he may be able to focus on his problems a little more. Balls will not give them courage and testosterone will increase energy which usually comes out in negative behaviors if not curbed/directed else where.

Hi and welcome to the forum . When you have a moment, pop over and say hi in the introductions area

Fear is a hugely complicated area and there are many things that can affect it. Things like neutering may possibly help but there are other things I'd be looking at first (or as well, I'm pro-neutering in general).
The first thing I'd do is general training at home. Victoria Stilwell has a series of videos that are great. Many are aimed at puppies but you can use them for all ages.

The more your dog know he can look to you for support, the better, and that's one of the big advantages of general training. Don't worry about pinpoint obedience, just improved communications and general working together.
Next, read through the below guide that I've coincidentally just written. It's a bit long but I promise you it's brief for the subject! Any questions, just ask!

Re: Problems
Thank you Liz i will have a read through now.
I have had him since supposedly 8 weeks he has always been fearful.
He walks not as much as he should do, as i have arthritis (i did not knowingly have this when i took him in) so exercise wise he gets play in the garden everyday, hour at the park/fields and street walk he gets ablut half hour a day longer if i can manage it.

this isn't actually true. the hormones released during puberty & just after help a dog to become mature & self confident. removing those hormones too early, especially in an already fearful dog, could make the dog even more fearful.
however, a stafford's maturity age is normally around 2 years of age, so that is a good age to neuter.
however, if you can tackle the fearfulness without neutering, i would do so. you can always have him done later on.
