cool coats
Hi,
My little buddy does not like the heat and being black gets very hot even on a mildly warm day - I used to have a towelling coat for my greyhound that you soaked in water and put on when he was walked but it was so messy to use.. does anyone use any other types of cooling coats for their pals
I obviously wont walk him in very hot weather but sometimes even the milder temperatures are getting to him...

Re: cool coats
My Bree was black and used to get very hot - I used to soak an old tea towel and lay it over her back,. She loved it and never pulled it off lol. Some old chap told us to do that lol.

Re: cool coats
i use an old cut up t-shirt for Lady
soak t-shirt bits in water .. put in container in fridge
transfer container to in-car-cooler ready for use if needed ..
that plus on hot days i try to walk her by a river or stream .. so she can have a paddle in cool water ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
towelling sounds a bit heavy if soaked in water
'n 'warm' when dried out ..
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i use plastic food containers filled with water
then frozen ..
as portable ice blocks

Re: cool coats
I would like to hear some recommendations too, my Flo was really not coping today. The T shirt things sounds like a neat idea

Re: cool coats
i think finding the ideal material would be important .. i.e. for best results
i've an old army shirt .. ( u.s.a. origin )
issued to me in 1973 .. worn often since .. still good as new
it be a flame retardent crew shirt .. for tank crew and the like
have also heard it refered to as a fliers shirt ..
flame retardent so it doesn't stick to skin in the case of a fire
point is .. it's warm in the winter .. and cool in the summer
( i've had to wear it in 40c+ temps in the desert )
be a fairly light weight material as well .. very comfortable ..
it also dries quickly after a wash ..
which suggests it might offer a good cooling effect if soaked in water
( not tried it myself )
have searched and searched for the same or similar shirt ( or material ) to buy
one problem is i've no idea what the material actualy is ..
nearest i've found be a crewmans flame retardent coverall
listed on some army surplus stores ..
and i'd have to actualy feel the material to guess if it's the same as my shirt
am tempted to get one .. and cut it up for the material ..
to see if i could make something suitable as a cooling top for Lady
~~~~~~~~~~~~
i've only used to 'cool t-shirt' idea for when Lady be in the car whilst i'm briefly shopping
and i'd previously stuck the soaked t-shirt in the freezer
problem is .. frozen folded t-shirt be a bit of a hassle to unfold .. :-)
my car has a tailgate window that can be left fully open ( has a metal guard behind it )
plus sun roof-panels that can be left open
and wind deflectors on the side windows that mean they can be cracked open ..
'n always park in a shady spot ..
and i've a white cotton sheet that goes across the front windscreen to keep the sun out
.. that works a treat keeping the interior cool ..
( and the tailgate window guard now has a slatted bamboo sun shade over it .. )
be a 'private-van' .. i.e. suv .. but no side windows at rear ..
~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~
i'm guessing one could make a dog-coat from a suitable material
and carry a water bottle with perhaps some ice cubes in it ..
then sprinkle the water from time to time onto the coat ..
or skip the coat .. and sprinkle iced water onto dog ..
Re: cool coats
I'm wondering if they issue the same sort of shirts nowadays. My youngest is joining in September and am now wondering if he could lose a T shirt
