Non-maternal mother to puppies
Hi
Is it a worry to be purchasing a puppy from a litter where the female isn't very maternal to her puppies?
She appears to do the bare minimal and leaves a lot of it up to the puppies themselves (4 weeks old) or up to the breeder.
The puppies are very well looked after and stunning. I just worry that this may affect their personalities?
Thanks

Re: Non-maternal mother to puppies
Can you tell us a bit more about the situation - is this the mums first litter, are the pups from a registered breeder, what is the breeder doing to help the situation?

Re: Non-maternal mother to puppies
please be careful. even if mum isn't too concerned with the pups, they should stay together until at least 7 weeks old, preferably 8 weeks so that they benefit from interaction with their siblings.
if all you're worried about is temperament, for example, then whether or not the mum is maternal shouldn't make any difference to the pups. if she's being aggressive towards them i would be a little more concerned because some aggression can be hereditary.

If the breeder is helping out and the pups are all healthy then I wouldn't be that concerned but as suggested above, the pups really do need to be with mum and litter mates until 8 weeks as they learn so very much in these early stages
