Raw Feeding Treats
Been to the vets today for Daisy's arthritis checkup and started to discuss the rawfeeding. I was totally unaware that you musn't feed raw food and then give biscuit treats in between. They said that the biscuits digest at a much slower rate and it can make the raw hang around in their bellies which can cause an issue with bacteria growing, resulting in sickness or bad tummy.
I have been giving mine bonios and biscuit treats in between. She said to only give raw treats. I have been looking them up and they are so expensive, that's training treats.
I looked on you tube and you can dry your own raw chicken and make your own raw treats, does anybody on here do that?? It would work out soooo much cheaper and looks really easy but I was wondering if anybody has done it and how they get on with it. Or if anybody knows of a supplier that sells reasonably priced raw dried training treats. Thanks. Clare x

Re: Raw Feeding Treats
You don't mix raw with kibble because of the differing digestion rates but I personally don't think there is an issue with treats, unless you're giving them bags full! I give mine biscuit treats and have for years, and have never had a problem.
I don't even know if this really is science or just something that everyone accepts as fact. If you think of what feral dogs eat and do well on, I have to believe that the canine digestive system is generally more robust than that. Or do feral dogs watch their food combining?
Edit: So I just had to go and look it up, didn't I? This is very interesting and makes a whole load of sense.

Carry on with those biscuit treats!

Re: Raw Feeding Treats
it used to be thought that raw was digested quicker than commercial, but the opposite apoears to be true.
however, for treats i doubt there would be a problem as there wouldn't be much of it!

p. s. if you want to invest in a dehydrator you can certainly make your own. it's quite cheap & easy, although it's fairly time consuming.

Re: Raw Feeding Treats
Thanks guys, I read the thread Liz, thanks. I swear the vets make things up. They used to tell us never to feed wet food and only kibble as it was better for them and their teeth. Now they tell you to feed raw and kibble isn't as good. I didn't see any harm in giving my dogs bonios here and there throughout the day but they said only natural treats. It was soo much easier years ago lol.
My homemade treats went terribly wrong this morn as they started cooking as my cookers lowest temp is too high, I'm rubbish.
Got some dried treats from farm shop, there were chicken feet and throats etc. they even had dried willy, omg I couldn't let my dog run round the house with that in his mouth, that is sooo wrong lol xx

Re: Raw Feeding Treats
I swear vets make things up too sometimes! My vet is now coming round to raw and has stopped trying to convince me bones will kill them, especially after realising that my dogs all have amazing teeth and I've never had one needing dental treatment. In fairness, I think they learn very conventional feeding and nutrition at university and then don't have time to look into it more later. Which is a pity.
The stuff they make treats with nowadays is mindboggling! Venison tongues are up there with chickens' feet and pizzle. Yuck. But unsurprisingly dogs love it all.

Misty loves a bulls pizzle. I bought a big box of them and give her one when she's in my car to keep her amused. I even bought her dried sprats for recall. Eurgh I don't even cook as hate touching raw food and have never ever touched a whole fish in my life until I bought these dried fish for her! I stand in the park grimacing every time I have to touch these fish! For some reason the tongues and pizzle don't gross me out as much as the fish.
