Miss coco
Hi all a little golden bully breed joining up... We are a gentle little girl.., who is very sensitive to loud noises & get scared if shouted at..., but I'm terrible for mum on the lead & very aggressive toward other dogs... We struggled to find a trainer due to my bully breed 'type' we managed to get one from Scotland to help us which were working on now... I'm a positive reinforcement user I don't like to scare her in to doin as she told which I kno takes longer but I'd rather a happy dog than a scared one.. Would just like her to be good with other dogs & not go in to heightened mode... She is a back yard breeder rescue dog that was rescued from drug dealer dog fighters so she has been breed to fight but she's a little sweetheart with people & my other two Labradors

Re: Miss coco
Hello Miss Coco- welcome from me and Misty. What a terrible start to life she has had
Its lovely to hear you are a positive reinforcement trainer and treat rather then punish. I completely agree with what you say about a having a happy dog and not a scared one.
It sounds like you are doing everything perfectly- these things can take time but Im sure with your attitude you will both get there!
We took my girl on at 14 months- she had never been walked or in a car etc etc. Walking her used to be horrendous- she would bark and lunge at everyone and everything- trees/cars/bins/people etc etc. Absolutely horrible but I understood as she missed out so much in her early months. It has taken a long time but now she is a different dog- she ignores people when we walk by them as she has learnt- people equal treats. When we see someone she isn't sure about she now actively looks to me for a treat and that stops her being panicked. She did regress a few months ago and Im still not sure why but now we are on the right track again, treats work so well on my little gannet:lol:
Lovely to have you both on the forum and cant wait for pics!

Hello, and welcome from me and Gizmo. I've found having the TV on a lot has helped getting him used to loud noises, would that be something you could try for her? Good luck, and we'd love to see photos of Miss Coco.

Re: Miss coco
It more if some one shouts at her for instance if she's naughty I just use a certain tone of voice & say 'miss coco, knock it off now young lady' and she knows to be good... However the other day I was in shower my mum was round at the house & the girls were play fighting & getting a bit rough so my mum shouted at them to stop it which coco then ran in to my bed & hid there until I got out of shower & then was stuck to me like glue until my mum had left again.. She's very sensitive

Re: Miss coco
Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me
Contrary to popular belief a lot of Staffies are actually very sensitive and, as you describe, quiet scared of loud noises and raised voices. My girl is deaf but knows when people are arguing and will get in the middle to put a stop to it.
As already mentioned, love and time are the keys and little by little Coco should settle and become less scared. Unfortunately you don't really know how she was treated before she found you but I suspect she was treated quiet harshly.
It's great to have you here and if any of us can help you and Coco at all please feel free to ask

Re: Miss coco
Hi from me and mine too!
Well done you for taking her on, she's very lucky to have found you.
It sounds to me like, regardless of her breeding, her 'aggression' may well be more fear driven. Bull breeds are often so sensitive and are also more prone to the 'keep away' response to a worry than many other breeds who will just cower.
One of mine - Chaos, the brindle and white one - is also nervous and I've been working with this method to help him - he's amazingly chilled near other dogs now.
https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t64420-bat-training-for-dog-on-dog-aggression-and-other-things
We're not all the way there due to lack of someone I can trust to work with, but the relaxation level near other dogs is brilliant. Maybe something to think about? (and yes, it is all positive)

Re: Miss coco
Thank you all & thankyou Liz I've been told rightly or wrongly that since coco was but by the other dog she has now gone in to protective mode, where she will now be aggressive towards the other dog in an aid to protect me...??
So I need to train her so she realises that I'm there to protect & look after her not the other way round...

Re: Miss coco
Maybe. But not necessarily.
I used to have a severely abused staffie cross - Bobbert - who was human and dog aggressive. I have no doubt at all that he was protecting himself first and foremost. Yes, if someone had threatened me he would probably have gone for them but I never felt that his usual reactions were anything other than defense of himself. I wish I'd known the BAT method with him, I'm sure it would have helped him.

Hello there from Una and me! Our Una's sensitive to noises too - Liz gave me some very helpful pointers, and we've been using both noise mp3s and calming classical music for dogs which seems to slowly be working with Una. The classical music works really well on me too
