Good weight for a Staff
Hi everyone,
I recently went to the vets with my Staff on a seperate matter I mentioned on here, and they weighed him as 27.2 and said he was 9kilos over weight. Is that right as I was told 24 was a good weight. If it's a bad weight, what do other owners suggest to get the weight off and bring him down some to a good weight.

Re: Good weight for a Staff
27 sounds heavy to me. Depends on the build really. My Flo is 18kg and I can feel her ribs but not actually see them and that's the sort of weight you'll be looking for unless Scoobi is a working dog.
Lower the food intake and plenty of exercise is the way I would go

Re: Good weight for a Staff
Hey Ian. Not sure if you can tell by my new default pic, but he is pretty big, and very very strong.
He's walked once a day around the block, but is out in the garden running around 4 times during the day, or if the weather permits, he is taken into a wooded area where he runs free for a good half hour to an hour, depends how lazily and slow I walk lol

Re: Good weight for a Staff
Ideally, and I know this isn't always practical, but 2 X 45 min walks are best as well as the walk round the block and garden play. I know it sounds a lot but Staffies are high energy dogs and really need to be able to burn it off.
If you can, try upping the main one to an hour and the round the block to a bit further to start with and build it up from there where you can.

Re: Good weight for a Staff
I will do that, thank you. Also, how often do you recommend I go back to the vets to check his weight while doing this? I was thinking 3 months until he starts to shed some, then extend the visits to maybe 6-7 months.

Assuming the vets scales are free to use as often as you like but as you say it will take a while for the weight to drop off. I tend to weigh my girl at the annual vets visit and anytime we are in her Dog store that has free scales too

Thank you. He's a little terror that's him on a good day with my cousin teaching him to stand up . You girl looks absolutely beautiful too.
I'll do the annual visits as they're free, and it's a good way to get him used to being in the vets, as he's not always cooperative

Re: Good weight for a Staff
Certainly worth keeping an eye on the weight, it's so easy to give em treats but they soon add up

Re: Good weight for a Staff
Can you post a full picture of him? It may not be that he's overweight, but maybe that he's a cross? Agree with Ian though that a walk around the block isn't suitable, I can't imagine how hectic my girl would be without decent runs daily.
My Bug is a cross but she's only 19kg, standard Staffies shouldn't really be over that. If you're nearly reaching 30 kg there's something way off.

Re: Good weight for a Staff
P.S at my vets you can pop in at any time to weigh, for free. I weigh Bug every 3 months when I go in to pick up her wormer, as any weight loss/gain may mean she needs a different dose.
