Roxy (10mths) Empty Roxy (10mths)

Post by BriggsX4 Fri Jan 08 2016, 14:58

Hi Everyone,
Delighted at last to join - having been viewing from time to time.

We have a wonderful 10 month Staffy named Roxy. My husband and I took about year researching before we committed for our daughter 9. We meet both breaders (show dog breader - her dad is in Canada now) prior to any puppies produced, so we knew the conditions and temperment of the parents.

Roxy is very cute, jumpy and licks everything. We still have her in her crate in the living room where she sleeps at night.
She goes to "doggie day care" and has passed level 1 in Obidence calss. We have a great dog trainner who works along side the day care, so she is well socialised.

Before she was 12 wks, we had introduced her to over 100 people, visited vets, pet shops etc to socialise her.

She is a one food only dog. Lots of issues since she was 4 months old, but fingers crossed this new food might keep her in line. She is ever so good and just idolises our daughter. She will sit in the living room while we eat our meals, and will obey "out" and not move a step inside to the kitchen, until we have removed our plates from the table, and then she is feed. She loves tennis balls and a good run in the tennis court in our area, she hates hates hates the RAIN.

Just wondering if any of you can advise, when we should look at her sleeping arrangments to remove the crate and leave a bed in another room (less for her to destroy) at night. She has had sleepovers upstairs over weekends with my daughter and us, but nothing during the week. She doesn't appear to mind the crate, its like her "haven" if she is too tired to play or socialise and if you say "into bed" to her she goes straight for the crate.

Also, as so is totally house trained, was wondering what age is it safe (for her) to leave her outside alone during the day, obviously we will introduce this in a gradual stage, but would love to have her outside during the day (depending on weather)

Sadly, a bad reaction by other people, once they know she is a "dangerous dog", but we are so mindful of this and don't take their reaction to heart. Roxy was in the park recently and was attacked by a "ugly dirty looking poddle" and she was left cut and scared, but made no attempt to react.

Any comments would be much appreicated.

Adele (Ireland)

Hi Adele, welcome to the Forum from Flo & me Big Grin

Sounds like you are doing really well with Roxy and she should turn out to be a well balanced happy Staffy. Sleeping arrangements are difficult because it can be confusing to them as to what they are and are not allowed to do. I would be inclined to keep it straight forward and have just HER bed and the option of the crate for a while yet but gradually encourage her to use her bed more and more (If you have the room you could always leave the crate as an option which could be useful during fireworks etc).

I'm interested with what you have done regarding food and what the initial issue was, could be useful to others Smile

I'm not sure what the ideal age would be to leave her outside but AussieStaff might be able to offer her experience with that. I would hope that there would be some shelter though.

As for the bad reaction from people, hold your head high and as long as Roxy is a good natured happy dog then you have every right to prove them wrong. Most of the Staffy owners I know go above and beyond with training and it shames those that haven't put the effort in with their own pampered lap dog that wont come back to them. lastly, grow a thick skin and have a few witty comments that you can offer in reply Big Grin

hia from me and sasha Smile staffies do love to be warm,so not sure if a good idea to leave her outside, maybe summer time would be ok,long as your garden is secure,as for her bed just be firm with her and let her know this is where she sleeps and not your bed Laughing

Hi Everyone,

Many thanks for your replies.

Roxy was eating the same nuts as her mother and father and sibblings... Gains, we went on holidays and left her with dog minders - we knew them and know Roxy was kept in doors and had some one with her 24/7 but got the "trots" and since then its been visits to the vets, brown boiled rice boiled chicken breast, and no other treats. Even in day care she was only given her own food as treats for tricks.
She has had a recent visit to the vet - 2 weeks and placed her on Burns (adult food) she seems to be responding to the larger nuts and not having so many "trots". The vet said she is in excellent condition and to keep her on the feed for the next 6 months, but if she gets ill again its "water only for 24 hours only", if this does not right itself within time, its an operation later down the road "gut issue". (200 grams daily) but of course she would easily eat 4 times that!!

She is so happy and healthy but we are concerned cos she looks so very very THIN, enough she weights 13kg her ribs are so noticable and if she wasn't our dog, we would think her owner never feeds her!! But we don't want to over feed her either but I do go over the 200 daily allowance but she is exercised to work it off..

She has a very secure medium sized back garden and the fences were reinforced to 6 ft a few weeks before she arrived, she has a house out there already, but we are looking to make a large house with windows for her to sit in and look outside with extra insalation . .... She only likes to stay outside if we are with her or if she gets a "whiff of a passing cat" otherwise she just wants to stay in with us.

She loves her bed and is tucked in with her blanket every night. I would like to move her into the dinning room, where there is a window she can look out to see passing people during the day.

Any thoughts?? Her body frame is small, but she just looks all muscle and thin..

Sounds like she's on a good feed routine and it's what the vet advises so would stick with that and a little cheating every now and then Laughing untill the tummy issue is nicely settled.

You'll probably find that when the days warm up she'll want to be outside more and more so I would play on the sun factor when it returns. A nice big Dog house sounds great thumbs up
