New furbaby
Hello everyone. New to this forum. Have recently bought a blue staffy pup, he's 7 weeks old, (yes I know he should've stayed with mum until 8 weeks) we are trying to learn him 'bite inhibition' as we know he may have missed out on this. Any body have any suggestions to stop him biting. Yes I know he's a puppy and they do chew and bite when playing. But I want to make sure I can train him to get it under control. I've tried yelping when he bites, firmly saying 'no' and he just growls and barks and thinks I'm playing and bites harder. Also started trying to walk away when he bites too hard, then returning after 30 seconds. Any suggestions would be great.

Re: New furbaby
hia from me and sasha sounds like your doing all the right things, you and every one in the house hold must all do the same, pups can be very rude and need to learn their manners lol, just keep up with the training and he will soon learn, they hate to be ignored so when the biting starts turn your back on him,he'll soon learn

Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me
As Stella suggests above but you could also try replacing whichever piece of your body he has with a toy. A rope toy would be good as you can then play tug and the association between toy and play will be made... Eventually

Re: New furbaby
Thanks for the quick replies. Me and my partner both try do the same thing. He seems to listen to him more than he does me lol. Was just worried as its our first dog and never had a staffy in any of our families so didn't know if it was normal as the yelpin and saying no only made him growl and bark, I think he thinks I'm playing. We are just worrying as we took him earlier than we should have so worried he's missed out on vital learning from mum and siblings. I do try putting a toy in his mouth when he's biting, tell him he's a good boy when he chooses a toy rather than me lol. He's doing really well other than with toilet training and settling at night

Re: New furbaby
please dont think the biting is in any way aggression,it is normal puppy behaviour and he will grow out of it,staffies are very vocal dogs and some of the noises they make can be a bit off putting if you dont know, any other questions you have just ask, take time to look around the forum it has a lot of information that may help you

Re: New furbaby
You're doing everything right by the sound of it. He is playing which is why they really should be in the litter till at least 8 weeks but I'm not sure a few days will have done too much damage.
The one thing I would advise above anything else is to socialise him with other dogs as early as possible. They and you will learn so much from puppy classes.
Glad you've joined us, we are here to help and guide you as much as you need

Re: New furbaby
We got him at 6 weeks, all the other pups were going too and confirmed it was okay by the vet as they were all doing so well. Little did we know until after we brought him home that they learn vital lessons between 6-8 weeks from mum and litter mates as we wouldve waited until he was 8 weeks. This is why we're trying to learn him best we can on things he may have missed out on. He has his first jabs next week, and we are wanting to take him to classes as soon as he's had all his vaccinations, cannot wait to be able to take him out to socialise. They're such clever breeds. almost learned him to sit already

Re: New furbaby
Don't worry, hindsight is a wonderful thing. The main thing they miss out on is what's acceptable and what isn't which is where good socialisation comes in to it. Puppy classes are ideal for this. You'll also hear about second phases where fright pops up, again, classes are a great way to overcome these issues before they start
