Play fighting
Heya guys need a little bit of advice so about 2 1/2 months ago we moved into our new house in devon and we have a field right next to our house were cody can go and play , Well today there was a dog there whose about 3 years old and cody was playing with her just barking and chasing her being a lil nippy puppy dog didnt seem care : the owner turned around to me and said if he keeps playing the way he is hes gunna be aggresive and unsafe around other dogs.
Im really worried as i know cody is hyperacitve when it comes to other dogs he just loves to play but could biting other dogs play fighting make him aggressive xx

Re: Play fighting
I would just continue socialising cody as he is srill learning when staffs play it can sound quite aggressive heres a couple of links that may help you

Re: Play fighting
Is he going to any puppy classes? Socialisation is vital with any dogs so they learn how to behave around other dogs. Staffies are very vocal when playing, as for the biting most dogs will put a puppy in its place if they don't like it. Katy has some young friends & will tell them off when she's had enough!! That owner was only looking at the breed for an excuse to say that, nonsense in my opinion

Re: Play fighting
Cecil use to play like that too so everytime I thought he wasnt playing nice I would end the playtime. But sometimes the older dogs will let him know whats ok and whats not. Just watch his body language and that of the other dogs. And as mentioned above, keep socialising

Re: Play fighting
Puppy classes may be out but you can still take him to obedience classes where he will get the same socialisation Kia. I think Jenc is spot on saying the other owner only saw the breed and not the dog. Staffies do play rough but that doesn't mean they are aggressive.
Whatever you do keep socialising Cody otherwise he will never learn. Cecil15 is correct with the advice about body language, it's so important to work that out too

Re: Play fighting
A harness and long line are a good way to go, if nothing else they will give you safety net if you do meet people who don't want their dog to play with Cody.
Playing rough with other dogs won't make him aggressive, but I do think that when they learn to play like that a lot it can be harder for them to moderate their play. We have to be careful with Chaos as he does just plough in and tends to flatten other dogs. I do understand why it's worrying for other owners!
So yes, keep the socialisation going but with that fallback.

Re: Play fighting
The training lead is a great idea, we got one from Amazon quiet cheaply. There is a thread further down the main forum page which recommends the Wonder harness, however, I haven't looked in to it to be honest.

Re: Play fighting
Hi sorry for the late reply, you will need a medium size for the UNHO and take no notice of that person, he obviously doesn`t know what he`s talking about. Maya is just 7 months old, yet she will play fight with any breed at any size and i have never had any problem at all !

Yes I agree, it's never too late to start classes. Misty didn't start until she was 19 months.

Re: Play fighting
They don't have to be obedience, Kia, any classes will be great socialisation and also good for your bond. So agility, especially the non-competitive kind, heelwork to music, whatever you fancy really! Just try and make sure that the trainer is into positive methods and makes it fun for the dogs.
