Proud mummy
As a lot of you know, Millie is an odd little thing, supremely confident with most things at home but liable to have a Millie Meltdown over random things (the green broom, someone coming in through the wrong door), and she also has waves of worry when out. She was hitting another moment of barking at dogs and people, hackles up but backing behind us at the same time, and she was more nervous than before with children. Her first meeting with children was a disaster - the kids were all holding flags on a nature walk and waved them at her (ha ha ha) with the parents doing diddly squat - so she's been scared of children ever since.
We've been going lots of easier places to resettle her but yesterday I decided to take her to the Danaher Toys 'n Treats open day to meet lots of people and dogs. She was a complete and utter star! Her biggest buddy of the day was Benjamin, a young corgi cross, but she also had a riot with a group of 3 husky/malamutes, met a big lurcher and a couple of staffies. She walked past the kennel blocks quietly, didn't look at the cats, and sat having cuddles next to a rabbit run with a rabbit in it.
The best bit, though, was that she learned about kids. Benjamin's owners have a child of about 10 and Millie was so busy playing with her buddy Ben that she barely noticed the child. We then met more kids, by happy coincidence getting younger and younger as we went, until after half a dozen or so she was happy taking treats from a toddler.
She was also really good about not jumping up, something we've struggled with as so many people just want to cuddle her, but yesterday she met people quietly with all four feet on the ground for the most part (there was one chap she just couldn't resist).
It's wasn't all completely perfect. A paper table cloth flapped viciously at her, she set off the shakes, and she was sure that bin bag full of treats glared at her with malicious intent...
And 5 people asked if she was up for adoption. No, she's mine!!!

Re: Proud mummy
You've both come a long way from that little pup that wasn't expected to be here very long to the wonderful little characterful girl she is now Liz.
You should be justifiably proud
PS.. Paper table cloths can be very scary ya know

Love hearing updates like this! Well done to Millie had she's doing so well. Axl has problems controlling himself around people he just wants to get near their face so he can kiss them he's a serial kisser lol. I am working on his jumping up would love some tips Liz and to know how you managed to stop Millie jumping!

Re: Proud mummy
I hope so, Brian! I can't remember why she decided I was going to beat her yesterday, but we had another meltdown over something random. I think I dropped something, can't remember what.

Re: Proud mummy
She is getting better, Ian. It's always hard to remember how bad something was, isn't it? We only have the occasional meltdown now, instead of the previous daily occurences, and she will now get over it more quickly.
I just need not to lose sight of her need for regular exposure to new things in a controlled way.
