Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
I'm afraid all I know about it is that it's also widespread in Spain. The UK is thankfully free of it.
Have you taken the advice of your local vet?

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
Here in Brazil people are like, there is a vaccin so you should have it. It is also pretty expensive and requires three shots and a bloodiest, so all vets here recommend it.
I am just not so sure since it is a very recent vaccin.

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
Tnx. As far as I know, the only vaccine that exist is from Virbac and can be administered as from the age of six months.

Not something I'm familiar with. I'm one of those that would go with vet advice but if you can share more info please do.

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
Here's the link to their brochure. Vaccinated dogs are about 4 times less likely to develop Leishmania.
I'm a risk averse person so I will probably go ahead with the vaccination, but I'm also a critical person. What does only 4 times less risk means if it is eg a 1/10.000.000 risk? Besides there might be unknown side effects since it has only been marketed for 4 years.

I suppose it's the same used in Spain, the vets here only know of the one from Virbac.

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
Got some more information from other dog owners and you will not believe what I am about to tell. In Brasilia, a dog that is contaminated with Leishmania should be put down. This is just ridiculous
I throughout it was a Joke but it is not!!!
Also research shows that about one in five dogs here in Brasilia is contaminated with Leishmania.

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
Why would they want to put them down if it's treatable !?!
So with that many infected it kinda makes the case for vaccination I guess.
Thanks for keeping us up to speed with this Peter

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
It makes indeed a strong case for vaccination. She would then only have about a 5% chance to get Leishmania .
But first thing is getting her tested anonymously since the government gets any positive results and may then show up to collect the infected animal.
I still cannot get my head around this. Leishmania is treatable and there is no scientific evidence that an infected dog poses any health risk to humans or other animals.

It does sound bizarre, especially when it's treatable

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
Ok. First the good news, Kiki tested negative and she received her first shot of the vaccin today. It does not seem to affect her in any way. She s still as lively as ever.
Thank heavens I have afound a good vet who is keeping up to date. If tested positive your dog does not necessarily need to be put down. You can have him or her treated (which is hugely expensive here). You get however the advice to have your dog put down because of the aggressiveness of the Leishmania virus. It is apparently another strain that is much more aggressive and the treatment is generally not so effective. If you do opt not to treat your dog, it should be put down.
So reality is a bit more nuanced that the information I got from my first vet and some dog owners here.
As for the vaccines, there were three on th e market but one was removed because it was not effective. Currently there is the one from Virbac and another (name escapes me) that is also more recent.Kiki got the second because the vaccines are similarly effective but the vet said the one from Virbac is almost abusively expensive.
Will not to go back on New Year's Day for her second shot. The vet said it is absolutely no problem. Let me just say the vet is adorable too.

Re: Vaccination against Leishmania ?
So not only have you found a good vet but one that's easy on the eye too eh
The advice the second vet has given sounds much more realistic than what the first one gave you but it makes you wonder how many people don't know the rules
