ok - some of you may have seen my post about poor Buddy getting attacked ( not hurt thankfully ) by a GSD last week - well we made sure we walked that route again soon after , and made sure that we have socialised him with other dogs since to make sure he gets over the incident , but he has a really strange reaction when he meets a dog .

He is fine nose to nose, no aggression , tail wagging bit excitable but nothing odd, but when the its time for the other dog to walk away he starts kangarooing around and backing back behind me and then trying to run away from the area as quick as possible ..he is really hard to hold .. once we get out of sight of the dog he goes back to calmly walking .

I thought at first it was just the one dog we met a she is an excitable little one and thought maybe they hyped themselves up too much .. but its been every dog since the day it has happened .. he used to just sit and watch the dog walk away or walk away with me normally , people are starting to move their dogs away as they think its aggression from him as he is on his back legs , but it is the opposite it looks like he wants to run away and yet he has spent time with the dog and been ok ???

I was coming close to letting him off his long line as his recall was getting good was only the chase instinct that was a concern now I wonder what would happen if a dog came to play if he would bolt..

do you think it is connected to the GSD incident or is there something else that is causing the change in reaction , he is nearly 8 months old -

thanks

Sounds like he's overexcited carol in a few months or pretty soon he can be going through the teenage phase which is something else to be aware of. Id get him to sit as before and wait till the other dog leaves. I would leave letting him free and keep using the long line till his recalls upto scratch Smile

I agree with Crystal, sounds like excitement. Even though my girl is older than Buddy she is still learning manners around other dogs. Every dog she meets she just wants them to chase her, she jumps up and down, she nudges them with her nose to get them to chase and if that doesn't work she barks to start the game. Last week she met both a collie and a beautiful little white dog and neither wanted to chase. They were fine with her but didn't want to play her game, so she literally jumped over each one. This was on separate occasions, both the owners couldn't stop laughing. The only thing I don't like is her barking as some people get worried when a staffy x is barking at their dog! I keep her on a long line as I know without it she would be up to every dog in the park. I don't think buddy is being aggressive just playful.

hi - I agree there is no aggression that I can see - its after they have met and the other dog is walking away that he goes mad, maybe it is over excitement which in some ways after the GSD incident I am pleased about - he got jumped twice in two weeks by aggressive dogs.. so was a bit worried it was the start of something .a Long line is a definite at the moment, although these mad incidences have been whilst walking on the road so Buddy and the other dogs are on normal leads .he is going in kennels for a week on Saturday - they are owned by the lady who does his puppy classes might ask her to find a big but gentle dog for him to play with, one that will put him in his place but not aggressively and see what he does.- he is a bit of a thug when it comes to play - he doesn't mean it but I think it puts other dog owners off ..

Carol , buddy is being a typical staffy im afraid with regards to the rough play but i believe its important he plays with an older more settled dog that can teach him whats acceptable forms of play.

Agree that you should let the other dogs tell them off, to a point. Obviously don't let them hurt him or fight him, but a good put in your place is ok! lol
