Meeting new dogs Empty Meeting new dogs

Over the past couple of days we have been taking Otis to more common areas to walk your dog and he has had the chance to come into contact with more dogs, which is brilliant. He has been lovely each time but the only thing I will say is when he does meet other dogs I get the feeling he is unsure, he lets the dog say hello, they have a good sniff, he gets slobbered on Laughing but Otis' tail isn't wagging whereas the other dogs have been so bouncy and lovely towards. He hasn't growled or shown any aggression in any way but like I say I do get the feeling he is unsure. Oh wait now I come to think of it this big friendly boxer bounded over today and said hello - again he was fine but the hair on his tail raised.

What can I do to improve this? Just continue with letting him meeting dogs and encouragement?

sounds like you are on the right track , a dog walking buddy would be great if its possible and if dogs get over bouncy and he's not happy then take him out of it

If possible, let him meet friendly but calm dogs rather than bouncy ones. Loki is one of those bouncy ones Rolling Eyes so I don't have that problem, but a friendly dog that isn't over-the-top will help him see that they're not so bad Smile

Moo's hackles come up when other dogs approach, she can look scary lol! Its not a dominant thing just something that she does, now either within seconds her and said dog will be chasing each other like mad things, or she walks off! Keep doing what your doing, they sort themselves out Xx

laska is the exact same as Moo, hers come up to but she only ever wants to play with other dogs. Marley used to greet by standing upright and curling his tail over in a dom pose which the mature dogs didnt like.

Both mine went to puppy classes but still needed the time to adapt to greeting other dogs. it gets better over time as they learn the do's and donts of dog etiquette. just slack the lead and give off positive vibes yourself as they will be looking to you for danger signs so no tensing and jerking back.

The more dogs he meets the better. If you have a friend that has an older well socialized dog he can walk and interact with that would be ideal. If not just make sure to speak with the handler to make sure their dogs are friendly and than let them introduce themselves.

Keep up the socialising and use the advice from above.. They are all different, Steff is the same as Moo Laughing She either loves the other dog or just ignores them.. She seems to be able to determine instantly whether the dog has the same play style as her (rough Rolling Eyes ) and only really plays with them

The more socialisation you can do with friendly dogs the better. If possible join a dog walking group where you can socialise in a controlled setting.

I'm planning to do this myself too Smile

Honey is exactly the same. She will nearly always stand there and let the other dogs say hello to her first then she might decide to sniff or walk off lol her hackles come up but it isn't out of being nasty or anything bless her. I just get told how chilled she is and how lovely to see her like that. Many a time she will sit or lay down for a dog to come to her. Honey is very friendly and sociable. A few dogs she will go to herself. Bless her she even knows certain dogs when we only meet them every so often and she then wants to play. just carry on as you are xx

Matt I'm setting mine up have a few answers.cant wait meeting quite a few and think the adverts and posters are helping.

Good luck. Its taken awhile for it to get going but Honey will have lots of people to walk with soon. And some are not local to where I live. She met an English bull terrier who she took a real liking to and his owner and I are arranging to meet for a doggie date xx
