poor Buddy - two bad experiences with off lead dogs Empty poor Buddy - two bad experiences with off lead dogs

Post by smudge95 Fri Oct 09 2015, 15:52

my poor little Buddy has been jumped on and nearly bitten twice now in two weeks - the first was a boisterous Lab puppy who started off running over to play, he was 10 months old and three times the size of Buddy , but didn't like it when buddy didn't want to know and started getting a little too over the top starting to bark and jump on him really scaring him - no collar so I couldn't even try and stop him - tried to tell it to sit but nothing was working, no owner anywhere to be seen - then a guy wanders slowly up after 10 mins , and says sorry he always does that ! I just cant keep up with him these days laughing.. .. wont say what I said to him but did contain the words lead , control and stupidity -

then last night my OH has him out walking nicely down the road after a play in the fields and out runs a huge GSD from a house -snarling and showing his teeth- nothing playful about this one - my husband got between him and Buddy who was pulling to get away but the GSD was not giving in and went for poor Buddies back luckily he missed and hubby pulled buddy away again, my OH said at some point either he knew him or Buddy were going to get bitten, at which point the owner came out of the house and grabbed his dog and said " if yours had barked he would have run away he is a scardey cat really"

My hubby said a few choice words and walked a few feet away -Buddy was traumatised and just fell to the floor - my OH was so worried he thought he was having a fit or something he managed to get him to sit up and was checking him when the GSD owner came back to check he was ok and commented as he was only a pup shouldn't do him any harm..at least he will know what to expect if it happens again !!

How my OH stayed calm I do not know he brought Buddy home and he ran to me and crawled into my lap and stayed there all night - even when he wanted to go out he was jumpy at every noise and shadow- he was ok this morning but was a little hesitant when we saw other dogs , he does have a little cut under his chin - not sure if the dog caught him of if it came from his collar where he was twisting and turning to get away.. but I cleaned it and he seems ok

Cannot believe how indifferent both dog owners have been about their dogs jumping on a poor puppy they seem to think as he is a pup its ok he will get over it... there is me trying to socialise him to be a friendly little staffy and dispel all the horrid rumours about the breed and there are other dog owners almost giving him a reason to dislike other dogs .. so angry - wanted to report the GSD owner but OH wouldn't tell me the house number...

Rant over now just needed to share the experience as been winding me up all day thinking about it...

Wow some owners are really clueless! Hope poor little Buddy is ok. It's terrible when you see your baby scared or even worse injured.  I know it's not easy but please try not to worry to much, I'm sure he will be fine. My girl was bitten by a dog that left some nasty puncture wounds on her face  and i was terrified she might get scared around dogs or even aggressive, thankfully neither has happened. I really hope Buddy bounces back soon. We have met so many off lead dogs where you don't see their owner anywhere near, how on earth can people let there dog out of their sight for so long, it would terrify me! Everyone always says it's ok mines friendly even when they they are quite clearly not  at wits end

Poor dog carol try not to fuss him too much as he will start to feel threatened from every dogand one day react badly , if possible try getting him socialised with older calmer dog and same breed if possible this will gain his confidence and expel the fear. Smile i do this as soon as possible and some encouragement to buddy when he comes across any dog. Some folk should not have dogs honestly .

Its a horrible experience, I've had quite a few dogs going for Katy & when she sees them or the same breed she shows fear aggression on her lead Surprised Gsd's are a nightmare in my opinion, my sister has 1 a day older than Katy but I would never dream of putting her anywhere near her Surprised

Poor Buddy Sad how awful! Lots of snugs tonight and back out tomorrow, feeling confident and meeting some gentle, kind dogs. It's the same everywhere, Bug's always pestered by off lead dogs and she really doesn't want to have to interact. People are clueless! Hope you're all okay x

he is ok been a bit clingy but he has been walked - dog came over to him in the park and growled a little he was ok but wanted to get home straight after this morning he said hello to a very strange dog -( one with no fur only on their heads and tail cant remember the breed ) and he got very very exited and I had to calm him down - think he liked that one ! funny my old greyhound always liked him too - just keeping him mixing as much as I can

He sounds a little nervous and shy. You might want to look at some classes with other dogs to get his confidence up a bit, cause he might suddenly snap at another dog if he is nervous of them all. I know how hard it is to not pamper them when they have a fright, but it is very counter productive they then think they did the right thing.

he does go puppy classes and he is fine with the other dogs when all are on leads - I have made sure he has gone back out to the same places and he has walked fine- he is a little skittish if he hears a dog bark but cant see them and doesn't like dogs off the lead when he is on it but until his recall is a bit better I cant let him off near us because of the main roads , he is quite a nervy dog and I am going to talk to the trainer at classes as she is also a behaviourist see if she can suggest anything..
