White Staff scratching his ears

Hi there, I have a white male staffy, he is 15 months and constantly scratches his ears to the point where they will bleed just below the ear entrance. We constantly clean his ears, have had him to the vets who say his ears are fine, chopped and changed his diet, no longer wash his bedding with softener etc...

Any ideas? Has anyone had a similar issue and if so how did you overcome it? It has been going on for months now.

Hiya iain im assuming you asked the vet to check his ears for infection and mites. Have you also thought of grass allergies. There may be something stuck there does he just itch or is he constantly shaking his head too.

Hiya, yes the vet cleared him of mites but he did have a little infection which when returned to the vets had cleared, he does shake his head a lot but I just put that down to his ears where he scratched, maybe I should take him back to the vets??

Always worth checking with the vet. Have you looked in to Thornit powder ? might be something to try.

In the meantime may be worth rinsing your dogs ears and drying thorougly when in or near grass

Thornit is good stuff defo worth a try,but wouldnt hurt to go back to vets, can I ask what do you feed? xx

They get Butchers dry mix with either Winalot meat or sardines

The ear scratching could be also down to the food. The food you are feeding isnt high quality. Heres is a good website of typical dog foods and has unbiased reviews www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk.

I personally would change diet, I had this with Vinnie and was near to pulling my hair out with the scratching. But finally found grain free products and Nature Diet meat was the answer. Let us know if you do and how it goes xx

If you are stroaking/rubbing their ears make sure you have no stuff on your hands like cream etc.

Thanks for the info everyone, I haven't changed his diet but they seem to be calming down a lot since the hot weather has gone, it could be related it could not but I'm going to let it run a bit longer and see what happens

Just back from my vets with this kinda prob, she's got yeast infection and weepy eyes,licking paws a lot had a steroid shot and got eye drops , ear drops and antibiotic tabs. Go back next week and see whats what, wants to start allergy tests so have to take insurance policy with me to see if covered.
Basically said Stafs are more prone to allergies and thats why she wants tests done.
Like Crystal says grass allergy or fungi allergy top culprits, most likely to be seasonal.

Aww poor wee iza if it was the cats col she would have been ill as a puppy have u any new plants in the garden?

Mushrooms are bad this year. Yeah paw licking started Spring, other symptoms showing now, eye infection been ruled out.

Is it possible shes maybe eaten a mushroom without noticing mushrooms are toxic for dogs ? Bless her hope u get her sorted hate seeing an animal ill .

Eyes seem to be getting better already. Have to look into changing her onto anti allergy dog food as well just in case.
