Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
Spikeylicious is gradually getting the idea of toileting in the garden, but for some reason he's not quite so hot in the living room. I swear, the second i turn away from him, his bum is hitting the deck....I've blocked his access to the dining and don't leave him unattended in the living room...
He had a second bed in the living room but i've removed all the bedding because he started treating it like a urinal!
He also gets more excited in the living, partly because we tend to play (but we also play in the kitchen), but i think also because there are so many distractions.
Any thoughts on getting him to stop?? Or should i simply not have him in the living room until he's older?
Cheers

hi he doesnt have control of his bladder until 6 months of age , its important you take them out to wee after playing, sleeping and eating and in between there will be the odd accident . just be consisent in your methods and it will all pay off

mine used to sneak into the cupboard under the stairs to have a ***t, so I empathise. We spritzed the flat with anti-weeing smelly stuff, nothing with amonia cos it smells like pee and then they go to town.

My pup still has the odd accident and it will be in the living room too, usually happens if it's raining and he try's to hold himself. Use detergent that gets rid of the smell of wee, and just keep putting him out as often as you can he will get better

Re: Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
Well, yesterday he rummaged behind the curtains and i called him out...He was all 'happy puppy' and bounded over..i went to him, and 'sniff sniff', little git had had a left a chocolate Mr.Whippy behind the curtain!
I'm cleaning up with a product called Simple Solution which is an anti-bacterial, anti-odour product. I'm using a biological washing powder...
He tends to get quite excited in the living room and a bit bitey, but when i put him in the kitchen he calms down and settles in his crate...
I managed to catch him this morning...tail up/bum down!, managed to get him into the garden where he made me wait for 10 minutes where he ran round and had a play, then i made a fuss when he got the job done....He's a little chewy, pooey git, whose making my eyes swollen and red, but i adore him...
(ive got a Docs apt tomorrow about my eyes. Ive got a condition called meibomianitis and Spike has made it flare up, so im going to see if i can get something for it).

Re: Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
Is he going in different places or sticking to one area in the living room? I used to put puppy pads down In front of my washer only place big enough and closest to the back door but Marley always went in the corner next to the fridge no matter what I used to clean it and take the smell away he wouldn't go on the puppy pad, so I moved it to where he was going and he used the puppy pad right up until I got rid of them

Re: Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
he goes in random places..today the little bugger had a crafty wee whilst i was closing the door...he literally came into the living room, i turned to close the door and he'd had a wee! So...i put him in the hallway (with the door open) and a toy to chomp on whilst i cleaned the wee..I went into the hall and my little mate had done a poo!!
I still took him out into the garden (yet again).....lucky i love him to pieces otherwise i'd get angry..as it was i was trying not to laugh...That cute face gets him out of all sorts of trouble!

Just being consistent and positive when he goes outside he will get the message eventually its just a case of them being outdoors constantly your hard work will pay off.

when he goes outside i always give him a fuss and if ive got a treat on me he gets that, either way, we always have a little play after he's been...the latest game is running around a large wooden pole ive got propping up the washing line..(i chase him usually, otherwise he spends most of his time hanging off my jeans!)

Hey! So is Spike free in the house? I would maybe go back to basics and restrict the areas, with positive crate time for naps/any time that you can't otherwise supervise. Or, keep him tethered to you so that you can observe him at all times, just until the toilet training is sorted. He is still very young, though.

I have tried using puppy pads with pepsi, but I'm afraid they become yet another thing to play with and more paper shredded, she is clever she goes in the bathroom for her toilet, normally slap bang in the middle of where you have to walk..

Re: Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
He doesn't have free reign of the house and is with me almost all of the time. i even take him to the bathroom with me..(incidentally ive gradually introduced him to the shower and he even let me bath him with water today)....
It's just that in the living room he tends to want to go, whereas in the kitchen he tends to jump outside....
When he went yesterday my back was literally turned whilst i was cleaning it up and he ducked into the hall because i'd left the door open!
The little git can get to the top of the stairs no problem, so they're blocked off, as is the dining room....

Re: Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
I remember it well up and down every half hour spent more time in the garden when I first got Ruby. But after about 2 weeks it was sorted and she had it cracked. I'm sure you'll get there. Now the chewing on the other hand...Ruby still loves a chomp when she can that's still work in progress

Re: Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
Does your living room have carpet ?the reason I ask is Buddy would do the same and I found out if I took my rug up and there was only laminate flooring he would run out into the garden or use a puppy pad - he thought that as the carpet was soft like the grass he could go on it..as soon as I took away the carpet he was fine if I put it down now he still attempts to go .. just a thought ...you are getting there they learn quite quickly you will be surprised ..Buddy still has a slight accident here and there at 6 months

Re: Naughty Puppy! The living room is NOT a toilet!!
My downstairs is a wooden floor, but i have a large rug in the hall (which is learning to leave alone finally) and a large one in the living room..he has wee wee'd on that a couple of times, but also around the room.
Today we have had no accidents (!!!), but we're only half way through the day..
I just keep trotting him out into the garden. Sometimes i'll sit out there with him but he won't go....It just takes time i guess.
Today i've been teaching him to stay and he was making good progress. We've had to get the water spray out a couple of times this week though when he's got a bit hyper and won't let go of a toe, but he's getting there bless him...
We had a lovely moment earlier..He was sitting at the back door watching the rain..he looked all grown up..so i sat there with him on the step and we just sat together..after 5 minutes he clambered onto me and we sat staring at the rain coming down...i was cuddling him as he made soft, contented noises...it was lovely..
Of course, 10 minutes later we're rolling around scrapping again!

aah - that's sweet it is nice when you have a moment like that - as they get older they get more often- when I get home form work after a mad ten minutes Buddy sits next to me and leans on me for me to scratch his back and then he lays down and just stares at me with his paws on my hand ...daft dogs and dafter owners !!

as a reward he's sitting on my lap right now going berserk for a frozen peanut butter kong!
