Injured New member Hello :-)

Post by KBELL33 Thu Aug 06 2015, 22:15

Hello Everyone.

Stay at home mum to 4 year old son and 3 year old daughter. Me and my husband are proud owners of our 1st ever staffy who is 11 months old and he is called sticks, a friend could not look after him anymore due to work commitments and life commitments and asked us if we would like him , and after careful consideration we agreed and I am so glad we did. Smile

Me and my husband have previous experience of other breeds but not Staffys, but we are day 1 and loving it. We took him for a health assessment today and he is 15 kg and in perfect health apparently. He was on a really bad diet in the past, so we have been advised to put him on a dry food diet with a high meat content etc....... he is on Wainwrights puppy.

He has basic training and is fully toilet trained which is a bonus, he loves to play :-)

I have a few questions for anyone who is willing to answer ??

When can we let him off the lead ??
How do you train them to drop the ball ?
What are the best treats to use when training, we have been advised against pedigree etc.....
What are the best bones, chews, toys etc.....

PS he snores and farts lol. Laughing

Thank you

xx Love Struck

Hi & Welcome to the Forum from Flo and me Kat Big Grin

I split your other post to give you a new thread but will lose that one after your great intro here Smile

Well done on the rescue too, Staffies will reward you with love and fun so very much, you'll never look back.

Q1 Off lead only when you have recall going good. Running after a Staffy is knackering and only good fun for them Rolling Eyes so use a long line and get that recall training going.
Q2 training to drop is best achieved with a high value treat. Think like he does, what's better, holding on to the ball or getting a tasty treat.
Q3 kinda answered that above but pedigree isn't good. Cheese is highly desired as is sausage as high value. For standard treats Wainwrights are good and we give Duck strips from P@H
Q4 there's a whole section called tried and tested for toys etc lower down the main forum, well worth browsing through.

As for the darting and snoring... Welcome to the wonderful world of Staffies Laughing

Yes, Ian has answered all your questions perfectly Smile I had Maya off the lead as soon as i started walking her at 10 weeks old. At that age they are pretty scared to leave your side, and as sticks is still quite young, i would just take him to a quiet field and just try. Or as Ian says, invest in a long training lead.

As for the farting /snoring...Yes Indeed Laughing

Hi there id switch ur dog to adult food the puppy wnt offer enough nutrients Smile. I looked up a long training line for you http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B00FG5PODM/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?qid=1438935615&sr=8-4&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&keywords=long+training+line&dpPl=1&dpID=51SpS32LjML&ref=plSrch you must be fully confident with recall your dog willsoon come into the teenage phase and will try and test what he can get away with Smile. I use natures menu 95% meat, she also has sausages, tripe , dog chocolate jazzles, tuna, whimzees dental chews, pointers sticks And butchers bones Smile . Not forgetting deer antlers and cows and pigs ears.
Tug rope toys are great ,boomer balls ive been told are staffy proof. Cardboard with small treats inside hide and seek is another good one .hide the biscuits and your dog looks for them. Hope you find the information useful Smile

Hi Kat and welcome to the forums. I'd say try out an assortment of toys and see what he more gravitates towards. Ian has provided you with some sound advice Smile As for the snoring and farting my 12 week old sounds like a man and his farts are horrid hahaha
