The need to chew! Empty The need to chew!

Post by KMack02 Mon Jun 22 2015, 09:28

At roughly what age do they lose the desire to chew. Absolutely. Everything?

I returned home the other day to find the padding had been taken out of one of my dining chairs. I know puppies explore with their mouths but at what age does that stop? At first it was cute. It's not any more Crying or Very sad

Maisie got hold of our house phone the other day - now we don't have one!! We have a crate but she goes crazy in it and really hates it! We are waiting until we have a couple of weeks off work to start proper crate training

Depends on the dog a lot too. Millie's recent tally includes my phone, my wallet...

I know you can't lock your furniture away, but the key is to keep things out of the way and make sure that there are interesting things that she can chew instead. Whenever Millie's got something it's because I left it in a tempting place, so my fault.

Kongs, cardboard boxes with treats in to shred, rope toys (I know some don't like them but I do), an old trouser leg with paper stuffing... be a bit inventive but at the same time make sure there's nothing that could be dangerous. I don't give dogs sticks or leave soft toys with them as they can both cause serious problems if swallowed, whereas paper/cardboard will break down.

Put the dog in a place where they are less likely to cause destruction kongs and nylabones are good chew toys as are rope toys before u go out take the pup a walk. Also be mindful of electric cables , if its possible get someone to sit and supervise the dog during the day its not easy having a pup but does get easier through time.

Marley didn't like his crate at first till he stole my slippers and put them in there, maybe try putting something in that smells like you, also he prefers a blanket over the crate

We have a crate but locking her in is a no go, she was sold prior to us owning her and kept locked in a crate for 3/5 days straight with dogs attacking her through it so even if we close the door she shits herself, literally.

She is aways left with a selection of things, rope toys/kong/balls but she prefers the chairs!! She's very rarely left alone as me and my husband work opposite shifts so the most she's ever alone is 30 minutes tops where one of us has to pick the other up.

It`s a tough one, but pepper should be growing out of it soon if it`s any consolation. The only other thing i could suggest is to take pepper with you for the 30 mins each time.
