buddys first walk and a question
Buddy went out for the first time yesterday and met a new doggy friend - he wasn't sure what he was supposed to do so just sat down and let the dog sniff him and then got up and wagged his tail and sat back down! to be fair it took longer to get the harness on than the actual walk but ...He was asleep by nine and stayed that way until this morning... took him out this morning but he didn't like the dogs barking in the park so need to work on that ..
he hasn't worked out to toilet when he is out - he holds it until we get home and then runs outside -the look of relief on his face is a picture! I am sure he will get there though ..
my question is...
I was advised by all you helpful people when I asked , to walk then feed ..but I have a slight timing issue that I need help with .. when my husband gets up at 5 Buddy hears him and starts barking - we have tried to tell him to go back to sleep but as soon as he is awake he needs a wee..as he is in the crate we have to let him out or he wets his bed .and then gets sad as he knows its wrong , but this does not give me time to get dressed to then walk him straight away , once he is up -I cannot get him back in the crate to wait for me to dress he wants to eat and barks and barks - I tried this morning by getting up before my husband getting dressed and hen walking him as soon as he got out of the crate but we were back by 5.30 and he was a live wire and I couldn't get my breakfast or get dressed without him creating , he didn't wee or poo on the walk as he had already done it when we let him out of the crate - I then fed him at 6 he gulped his food down so fast which he doesn't normally do because he was hungry and then he went out in the garden to poo... I walked him again at 7.00 but it was all such a rush .. not at all enjoyable
so should I let him out for a wee and put him back and put up with the barking ( not sure about the neighbours) and then walk him and feed as today or should I let him out for a wee feed him at five and dress whilst he is eating , (but again he may poo before we get to walk ) and then walk him at 6 ..?
I do not want to create a bad habit of him getting up early as ideally I would like to walk him later in the winter but it is not falling into place at the minute , I am a little confused as to what to do - I leave for work at 7.30 and we are up at 5.00 or 6.00am every morning ..
Any advice please ?
what have other people done? I am sure buddy is not special in this area ..its more me who needs to the help than him !

Let the dog go do his business soon as you wake then feed him then walk him

Re: buddys first walk and a question
It took Bane a little while to get used to going to the toilet while out He will get there!
As for the mornings, stick to a routine that suits you and he will get used to it. Dogs like routines As long as there is about half an hour or so for his food to settle before he goes on a walk, you shouldn't have any problems. Sounds like he is eager in the mornings

We often feed Suki before a walk but wait at least 30 minutes after feeding

Set up a routine that suits you and stick to it he will know whats going on and settle into it as well for example we do this, I wake at 5am take Harrie for a small walk 10-15mins just for 1s and 2s then its home and she jumps back into her bed with a biscuit, SHMBO takes her on an hr long walk/play at 7am then its home for breaky and the staffy ball comes out for 1/2 hr while Loz gets ready for work once the staffy ball gets put away she jumps back into her bed and waits for me to get home at 3:30pm for the next walk.

Re: buddys first walk and a question
I know the routine I want but its getting Buddy to comply - I would like to get up at 5 get showered and dressed come down and take him out and then feed and let him in the garden just before I go for a final toilet break as I notice he goes twice once before eating and once an hour after , but as soon as he hears the alarm he is barking his head off and if we do not let him out of the crate as soon as , he wees through excitement or stress or whatever.. it seems as soon as his eyes open his bladder goes off.. if I let him wee and then try and put him back so I can get ready , the noise he makes is horrendous I am sure the neighbours will complain... its easier to feed first then walk but by the time I do that he has toileted in the garden so I am worried he will never get the idea his walk is for toileting in the morning..and will stick to doing it in the garden forever , maybe when he is a bit older and can hold his wee better it might become easier.. I think I am more stressed with it than he is ...

Re: buddys first walk and a question
It may just take some time for him to get used to it. Do you always go straight to him when he makes a lot of noise?
If so, at the moment he is probably learning that his barking and making a big fuss, gets him your attention and gets him let out in the morning.

Re: buddys first walk and a question
Yes he is still young and a night in a crate will mean that he will want to go for a pee or poop first thing, it may mean letting him out to the yard for that you may not be able to get around that problem even us humans normally head straight to the loo once we wake.

Re: buddys first walk and a question
My partner gets up at 5 too and Marley always wakes and fusses a lot, so he lets him out and he always does a 1 and 2 then has some food a drink another toilet then he's put bk in his crate till I get up with my daughter which is normally 7, I then walk him at 8 once I fed and dressed both me and my daughter. Maybe your husband could let him out when he wakes let him out for a toilet and feed him giving you time to shower etc

Re: buddys first walk and a question
I walked and then fed this morning I woke before the alarm so he did not know I was up .. my husband is a bit like buddy - as soon as his eyes open he has to toilet so Buddy would still have to wait to be let out, by which time he would have woken us all up anyway ! - he managed his first wee out in the big wide world but still held himself for number 2 until we got home which made him pull and be very agitated when out .. as soon as we got home he did no 2 and then went mad as he wanted feeding...I think feeding then walking may be a better option until bladder control and his acceptance to wait in the cage until we are ready is better might be a better option at the minute...at least he is not toileting in the house ..small steps to big goals I think ..

He'll soon get his courage up! I think they are a bit shy Might be the smell of other dogs around that make him wary of going while on a walk. Just when he does go crazy with the praise and he'll get it

did a wee straight away when I walked him this morning - he could be shy - we took him to the pub last night and he held himself the whole time and then rushed to go when we got home .. wish I had his bladder control !!

Re: buddys first walk and a question
Ah he is still very young so it will take a while to get the hang of the routine. It's fine to feed first and then walk as long as you give enough time to let the meal settle first.
The issue with him making a racket as soon as he hears your alarm will only be solved if you totally ignore him. At the moment he knows that if he makes lots of noise he will get attention and that's the behaviour you need to break. If he wins this battle he may well decide that barking always gets him attention !.

Re: buddys first walk and a question
We've always fed then walked. The normal routine is up and let out and she pee's, she's then fed. I have a coffee and a little fuss of her then we go out for her walk. She usually does both when we're walking. When we get home Lynn is up and ready and this gives me time to get sorted.
She has always been pretty laid back and calm on a morning so it's always been quite easy really.
Do you have a toilet word for your pup? If you do use it when you're out and treat if and when it works.
Pete

Re: buddys first walk and a question
I have stuck with walk then feed this week to see how it goes.. he now does number ones out but not number 2 - I notice he only does this once he has eaten-only issue is normally half way through eating then he comes back and finishes. He knows when I say Toilet he has to do number 2 in the garden .. I say it so often when we are out some man answered me from his window to say he had been !! must have been saying it louder than I thought!.. tomorrow I am going to try feed and then walk and see if that is any better .. he even had two walks today and still nothing .. I am sure he will get there at some point...!

Re: buddys first walk and a question
fed and walked over the weekend and today.. no number 2 in the mornings when out but he did go in the evening on Sunday .. so he isn't shy about going - I just think when I walk him he doesn't need to go...
I think it may well get better when I can take him on longer walks then we will still be out when he needs to go- for me feed then walk fits better , but he is so hyper when he comes back - I think walk then feed may be better as feeding him when we get home gives him something to concentrate on ..and me time to do breakfast..but at least he has been now !
